George Pickens Faces Uncertain Future with the Cowboys

George Pickens, the brilliant wide receiver claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers in May, is making waves. That’s why, as he approaches unrestricted free agency at the end of this season, all eyes are on him. For Pickens, he’s just a few months away from turning 25 years old next March. His performances this season have made him one of the most coveted receivers and “a real difference maker for the” Dallas Cowboys.

In recent weeks, Pickens has been putting on a showcase of his jaw dropping talent. He’s tallied 32 receptions, 525 yards and six TDs over the past five games alone. This historic run has allowed him to show off his unique skill set, while establishing a career high in touchdowns. In fact, if he finds the endzone yet again this Sunday when the Giants take on the Washington Commanders, he’ll set a new franchise record. He’ll be the first Cowboys wideout to score a receiving TD in six-straight games – an accomplishment last achieved by T.O. in 2007.

Pickens joins the ranks of Amari Cooper as one of the few Cowboys receivers to record at least 500 receiving yards and six touchdowns in their first six games with the team. Team management has lauded his performance and trumpeted his work. Owner Jerry Jones has been most impressed. Spielman had nice things to say about the trade that brought Pickens to Dallas.

In almost all every area of it, he’s doing a lot more than we are hoping or that we would have ever imagined. Jones stated. He further emphasized Pickens’ positive impact on the team dynamics, saying, “What’s really special is he’s a real plus to have around the team. He’s a real plus around his teammates. He’s a great plus around those coaches, and the coaches really think highly of him.”

On this stark contrast to his impressive on-field success, Pickens is staying grounded and concentrating on this season instead of his future contract situation. Answering questions about his future with the Cowboys, Pollard made it clear he hopes to be re-signed. He was still coy about his intentions. Production has overtaken my perception, so it’s difficult for me to conceive of everything at this point in the season. I wouldn’t want to get ahead of myself just yet! I want to be just as fierce in my desire to move ahead. Here’s to a deep playoff run—go Bucs! he explained.

The Cowboys’ coaching staff acknowledges Pickens’ contributions. Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer noted that if Pickens can continue performing basic activities such as running and catching passes, he is likely to play in the upcoming game. That wasn’t the case as he was indeed listed as limited on the practice sheet Wednesday.

If the season continues to unfold along this trajectory, conversations about Pickens’ future will be rampant. Jones suggested the challenges that come with negotiating contracts during an active season. You know, we’ll balance that out, too. We understood going in that if things truly played out the way we wanted them to play out, that definitely we had to consider having some space left over if we were really gonna invest in a second receiver at that level,” he told .

Pickens’ infectious energy and chemistry goes beyond what he brings to the field. His tenacity and infectious personality to uplift team morale ensures his greatest value is beyond the gridiron. He doesn’t stop there, he’s done a brilliant job performing. Whether we’re talking about fans or analysts, everyone will be watching intently to see what happens in the next few weeks.
