Additionally, the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup is on track to be a monumental tournament. It will run from June 11 – July 19, 2026. This tournament will be a groundbreaking first in World Cup history. It would be the first edition to include 48 teams, an increase of 16 teams from the 32 teams who played in Qatar in 2022. This should be no surprise – the upcoming World Cup will be the biggest tournament ever! It’s going to be spread out across 16 different cities, in three different host countries – the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The decision to expand the tournament reflects FIFA’s ambition to enhance global participation and excitement in the world’s most-watched sporting event. The tournament will bring together a record number of teams. Most importantly, it will allow them to connect with fans across different cultures and communities.
Host Cities and Stadiums
The United States will play a prominent role in hosting the 2026 World Cup, with 11 cities selected as venues. Notable stadiums include:

Mexico will be a co-host with three cities: Mexico City, home to the renowned Estadio Azteca with a capacity of 83,000, Guadalupe, hosting Estadio Monterrey at 53,500, and Zapopan, featuring Estadio Guadalajara with 48,000 seats.
Tournament Format and Schedule
Originally, the tournament’s group stage was set to occur between June 11 and June 27. For the first time ever at a World Cup, the group stage will feature 48 teams. They’ll be seeded into 16 groups of three teams each. The six groups are comprised of the 24 teams, and the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage. Furthermore, the 8 best 3rd placed teams will go through to the round of 32.
This year’s tournament has a fun new wrinkle. Importantly it will include an inter-confederation play-off to add two additional slots! This new structure will help ramp up global competition and open doors for more teams around the world.
Entertainment and Anticipation
The focus of the tournament’s conclusion will be a big final showdown, which is sure to be unforgettable. Coldplay will headline the half-time show. Personally, I can’t wait, as their performance will bring a rousing new dimension of entertainment to the already electrifying battle between the finest football titans on Earth.
For passionate fans and casual observers alike, much of the excitement will build toward the draw for the tournament, scheduled for December 5 in Washington. This event will decide the group distributions and lay the groundwork for a summer filled with beautiful, brilliant, with those most familiar footballing arts.
