Za’Darius Smith Announces Retirement After 11-Year NFL Career

Za’Darius Smith, the veteran defensive end who recently signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, announced his retirement on social media on Monday morning. This surprising move brings an exclamation point to an All-Pro, 11-year NFL career. Along the way, he represented the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions displaying his skills at a high level.

Smith was a stat machine over the course of his career. He finished his 145-game career with 70.5 sacks, 176 quarterbacks hits and 87 tackles for loss. He was put on IR at the end of September because of a triceps injury. Even with that injury, he still figures to add at least 1.5 sacks, three QB hits and two tackles for loss in five games with Philly.

So the key was Eagles’ specific plan to use Smith’s long history of experience and exceptional productivity to shore up the priority position. They were particularly keen for him to start pocketing big performance bonuses this season. What led to the decision to retire was a surprise to most, even Smith.

“I knew this day would come — but now that it’s here, l’m feeling so many emotions I never expected,” – Za’Darius Smith.

In his emotional retirement announcement, Smith reflected on his remarkable run. He was a raw prospect when he began down in Greenville, Alabama, with only one year of high school football under his belt. His words ooze with appreciation for having spent 15 years in the league, accumulating so much wisdom and experience on that journey.

“Who would’ve thought that a kid from Greenville, AL, with just one year of high school football experience, would go on to play professional football in the NFL for 11 incredible years!… As I step into the newest season of my life, please know this game has meant the world to me. The lessons learned on and off the field will stay with me forever.” – Za’Darius Smith.

Smith’s professional career started in 2015 when he was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens. He quickly established himself as a force on the field and became known for his ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks. His path through the league became his greatest asset, and in turn transformed him into one of the league’s most respected leaders. His impact extended well past the box score.

As Smith steps away from the game, he leaves behind an indelible legacy of hard work and devotion. His legacy will continue to inspire his teammates and fans of all generations.

“I’m cool with what I got and what I’m going to earn as far as incentives,” – Za’Darius Smith.
