The Jacksonville Jaguars suffered a disappointing 20-12 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks at EverBank Stadium on Sunday, leaving head coach Liam Coen and players grappling with a series of mistakes that marred their performance. The race-winning team now faces the even tougher challenge of repairing these imperfections. They’re already laying the foundation for the next one with their London game.
Coen was blunt in his self-critique, calling it an “undisciplined operation right now.” The Jaguars racked up a whopping ten penalties on the night, including one that wiped away an apparent touchdown score. Combined with a notable lack of discipline on the field, this would highlight longstanding struggles that have in large part haunted the team all season long.
Jacksonville’s offensive line got completely overwhelmed when pressured, giving up seven sacks. In no small part due to a staggering 27 QB pressures forced by Oklahoma’s defense on the night. This was the most pressure count against a quarterback since at least 2016. Patrick Mahomes dropped back under pressure a mind-boggling 28 times in Week 9 of 2022. Coen acknowledged that some of the sacks could be attributed to quarterback Trevor Lawrence, stating, “Maybe didn’t feel like he had enough time in some ways.”
The receiving corps did the squad no favors, adding three drops of their own to the mix. Wide receiver Ty Thomas dropped a potentially game-winning OVERTIME pass directly in front of the guy. This miscue happened on a vital third down late in the fourth quarter, nonetheless. Reflecting on his performance, Thomas remarked, “I feel like I have been doing better the past couple of games, until I had the one that I feel like I could have had.”
The Jaguars’ special teams were downright terrible. A failed field goal and a game-changing point-after-touchdown conversion. These gaffes proved to be their undoing in their eventual loss to Seattle. Both the players and coaching staff were taken aback by the result.
As the Jaguars look ahead through a bye week to their monumental London departure on Monday, Coen said it was encouraging to be able to take that reset. He stated that the trip would allow the team to “close ranks, avoid outside distractions, and concentrate on trying to end self-inflicted mistakes that cost them the game against Seattle.” He underscored that it is important for the team to have a chance to work through these items before going up against their next opponent.
The Jaguars have been victims of the same mistake multiple times all season. Their one really bright moment was a Week 5 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Pointing to all of the challenges, Coen amplified the need for this improvement, claiming simply, “It’s got to get fixed.”
Boy, do the Jaguars have a schedule from hell coming up. They need to make the most of this moment in London to reorient and make amends for their failures. The goal is to not make the same mistakes over again and create positive energy heading into subsequent games.
