Baker Mayfield proved he’s the real deal once again on Sunday. He quarterbacked the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 30-19 upset of the previously unbeaten San Francisco 49ers. This surprising win shot the Bucs all the way up to 5-1 on the season and even gave Tampa Bay the best record in the entire NFC. For such a big win against a top-ranked team, Mayfield wanted to dial down the enthusiasm after the game.
The Bucs were put in a tough spot for most of the game, but this was a game-changing Mayfield performance. His defining moment came on a huge third-and-14 play when he was almost sacked by three defenders. With great presence and athleticism, he danced and darted his way to a 15-yard gain to get a big first down.
Mayfield’s contributions didn’t stop there as he later made a sensational throw to Tez Johnson on the run for an unbelievable 45-yard touchdown pass. This play displayed Mayfield’s ability to make the big throw when it counts most. He carried the team to victory with little support from his starting offense, riding the strong performance of tight end Cade Otton.
In making sense of the game, Mayfield said he has a lot of confidence in his teammates.
“I truly, genuinely trust the guys that are in there. … They’re ready.” – Baker Mayfield
As glad as the comeback victory made Bucs fans, Mayfield didn’t let himself get too high, understanding that the games don’t get easier from here.
“So, got a big one next week. It’s awesome to have support, don’t get me wrong. But we’re just getting started.” – Baker Mayfield
This season marks a stunning redemption arc for Mayfield. After a tumultuous season with three different organizations, he signed with the Buccaneers for the 2023 season on a one-year, prove-it deal. Just as quickly, the Cleveland Browns reverse-traded him to the Carolina Panthers. After his release, he spent some time with the Los Angeles Rams when Matthew Stafford was hurt.
Regardless of the reason, the change in scenery has definitely worked wonders for Mayfield’s career. He has, after all, led the Bucs to back-to-back division titles in his first two seasons. Last year, he had extraordinary personal statistics, tossing 41 touchdown passes.
Even with Mayfield’s hot start this season, he is not one to tempt fate by going there with comparisons to all-time greats. When asked about his performance and potential MVP talks, he responded:
“No, that’s the first time I’ve ever heard that, and hopefully, it’s the last.” – Baker Mayfield
While Mayfield’s road hasn’t been an easy one, he’s shown time and time again a fire and perseverance that has fueled him from the Walker Line to Oklahoma. His head is still down there, still focused on the team success instead of his individual honors.
As they look past this season and then continue on their current trajectory, the Buccaneers are set up for substantial success. They can’t let their guard down, as stiffer competition awaits in the coming weeks. Though they continue to eye games ahead on the schedule, it will be Mayfield’s leadership — as always — that will help keep them on a roll.
