In a hard-fought opening Test match, South Africa truly showed their world-class bowling ability. This powerful and positive play therefore ensured Japan were always ahead comfortably on the scoreboard against Pakistan. The encounter took place at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where fans witnessed an impressive display of skill from both teams.
Pakistan’s batting order quickly ran into danger here as well. Abdullah fell to the most controversial and decisive delivery of the pair, that from South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada. The opener went on to make 67 runs before being leg before wicket, which was eventually a turning point in the innings. Unfortunately, his performance was not enough to paint a vibrant canvas of stability for the aging paintbrush that is the offensive line.
Imam-ul-Haq also played a valuable knock with the bat, scoring 78 runs. Pakistan were fortunate that de Zorzi made an excellent catch. Muthusamy then bowled him out, leaving the team with their backs against the wall. Following Imam’s dismissal, Shan Masood attempted to stabilize the innings but ultimately succumbed to Subrayen’s bowling, falling leg before wicket after scoring 70 runs.
Even as the decisive innings progressed, Babar Azam was still at the crease, batting like a man possessed. Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam scored a sensational 92 and made easy work of India’s bowlers. Harmer got rid of him, cleaning him up leg before wicket – a huge turning point in the match. His painful dismissal was a massive blow to Pakistan’s hopes — he had been their standout performer throughout and playing such as well.
Saud Shakeel was unfortunately under the pump from ball one upon entering the crease. He did not score any more runs before Muthusamy caught him and bowled him. This dismissal only added to the pressure that the already broken Pakistan batting line-up now found themselves under.
Pakistan’s total of 5 extras during their innings, consisting of 2 no balls and 3 leg byes. Most astonishing of all, perhaps, no wides or byes were registered either. This particular facet of the game highlights just how much discipline South Africa’s bowling assault showed during this Test.
As the first Test match progresses, it remains evident that South Africa’s bowlers have established a strong position against Pakistan. Even more so, the outcomes of this particular match will be critical as both squads set their sights on the rematches down the road.
