Romeo Doubs should have a significantly heightened role in the Green Bay Packers’ receiving corps. He’s become an early favorite target in the team’s new offensive scheme. Graham Doubs went off for a three-touchdown performance in last week’s 4-week theatre tie with the Dallas Cowboys. Today, he’s capturing the world’s imagination as he races down the 2023 season. Doubs hit the ground running in an impressive manner, and he continues to work hard today. With free agency starting in March, he’s set to be a hot commodity.
As seen in the last-second win against the Cowboys two weeks ago, Doubs knew how to come through in the clutch. His three-touchdown game was a what for his career. Prior to that he’d scored more than two TDs in a single game just once and had never tallied a hat trick. Such performance did not only serve to demonstrate just how gifted he is; it set the stage for what he could accomplish with the Packers moving forward.
Doubs’ journey has not been without challenges. Last year, he hit one wall after another. One of the big factors was a second concussion he took in the wild-card playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Following these occurrences, he decided to be proactive by wearing the Guardian Cap over his helmet full-time to prioritize safety. Doubs is concussion free this year so far and that has kept him healthy, helping with his development, forcing him to become more effective in all areas of the field.
His coach, Matt LaFleur, lauded Doubs’s commitment and work ethic in a fashion only a coach can. In the four years since, LaFleur says, Rome has gone about it all the right ways. As the chosen miracle, he pointed to Doubs’ commitment. He just comes in with the right attitude every day to work, goes about his business and then you see it translate to the field,” he added. These feelings speak to Doubs’ desire to be better and how connected he clearly is to the team.
This season, Doubs is positioned to finish with the kind of historic numbers, just under 55 catches and 760 yards. These totals will surpass his previous best of 674 yards set in 2023. More importantly, they will set him up to be an important building block for the Packers moving forward. In fact, he’s already netted four touchdowns in the first four games this year alone. This accomplishment cements his standing as a go-to option for quarterback Jordan Love.
Jordan Love sings the praises of Doubs for putting in the work. He went on to say, “That’s every single day Doubs walking in with the right mentality, working hard and pushing everybody else to be their best selves. This overwhelming endorsement from his coach and teammates is a sign of Doubs’ strong character and suggests he’s highly regarded by everyone in the Packers’ organization.
As Doubs gets ready to hit free agency in March, analysts around the league are already predicting what kind of contract they see him earning. He could be looking at a deal comparable to Rashod Bateman’s three-year extension worth $36.75 million or Khalil Shakir’s four-year contract valued at $53 million. Considering his newfound trajectory and last night’s performance, contracts like those hardly appear unrealistic for Doubs should he keep it up.
“Honestly, bro, this is a team thing,” – Romeo Doubs
With his recent success and clear potential for growth, Doubs finds himself at a critical crossroads in his career. His ability to erase the memory of past miscues and continued strong performance should be a testament to his character and mental resilience. He’s developing rapidly into an impact player and leader on the floor. Fans and analysts alike will be interested to see how he deals with this critical juncture in his career arc.
