Max Greyserman Takes Commanding Lead at Baycurrent Classic in Japan

Rising senior Max Greyserman is atop the Baycurrent Classic leaderboard with a stunning four-shot lead. He left an indelible impact on Friday with a powerhouse performance that further asserted his frontrunner status. With his 8-under 63 round, Greyserman sits with a 12-under 130 two-round total. This comes a year after he narrowly missed the title, losing by just one stroke to defending champion Nico Echavarria.

The tournament, moved this year to Yokohama, is a departure from its former home just to the east of Tokyo. Greyserman reflected on his experience from last year, noting, “I would imagine some of these people went last year and I’m sure they remember me.” His strong performance so far makes it clear that he’s serious about earning, and winning, this particular race.

Kazuki Higa displayed incredible prowess in the second round, posting a scorching 8-under 28 on his opening nine holes. He completed the round with a score of 64 overall, leaving him at six shots behind the lead of Greyserman. His 61 featured eight birdies on his first nine holes, showcasing his impressive start.

Collin Morikawa, one of the bigger names in this week’s field, was able to sign for a 3-under 68 on Friday. He is nine strokes behind Greyserman. That’s all moot considering the fact that he does have a nice cushion, remaining four strokes clear of runner-ups Alex Smalley, Xander Schauffele and Alex Noren.

Xander Schauffele commented on the conditions throughout the day, stating, “Yesterday felt like you were just trying to survive the round and at some points it felt like there’s almost no wind today.” He praised the course conditions, adding, “Greens were rolling pretty nice and the wind was down. If you’re hitting good shots you were getting rewarded for them, so I was able to take advantage of a lot of that.”

Max Greyserman’s unprecedented performance has paved the way for an incredible final round. He remains determined to secure his first event win in Japan, building upon the lessons learned from last year’s close finish against Echavarria.
