Mac Jones Optimistic About Recovery Ahead of Buccaneers Game

After being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, quarterback Mac Jones is in good spirits following a diligent rehab progress. He’s recovering from a bevy of injuries he picked up over the past few games. After the Thursday night matchup, Jones made the most of the extra days of rest. He used all this time to focus on treatment and rehab, concertedly hoping to be prepared for the team’s week 10 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In Jones’ case, during last week’s victory over the Los Angeles Rams, he had a knee injury to start. He tweaked an oblique late in the game, which only adds to the incredible nature of his performance. In spite of these challenges, Jones has continued to take an active approach to his recovery. In addition to tracking his sleep and diet, understanding the ways in which both factors help him heal has been essential.

During a limited throwing session that was open to media on Thursday, Jones demonstrated his determination to return to form. He did not take part in any team periods, but he was very much used as a guy leading handoffs and that sort of activity. This helped him stay engaged with the team. On the practice field, the coaching staff said that Jones has been given additional reps in practice, a testament to how far he’s come in his recovery.

Jones shared an optimistic tone about his chances of being available for Sunday’s game. To that he replied, “I don’t deal much with hypothetical scenarios. I think it’s safe to say I’m very, very sure that I put forward a really good plan. The game is on Sunday, and just play it by ear and see how I’m feeling when we land. This sentiment highlights his focus on the immediate future while acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding his condition.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan shared Jones’ enthusiasm, calling on the quarterback’s work to recover “inspiring.” So for now my goals are entirely centered on recuperation. I think I’ll be returning to normal come Sunday, but I was certainly not fit to race today. So, fingers crossed that will get better and better,” Shanahan said. Still, his comment highlights the coaching staff’s optimism that Jones will be able to get back to full-strength functionality in no time.

As he goes through treatment, Jones has told me that he’s “just going to focus on getting treatment every day and working. This constant pursuit underscores his commitment to recovering. More importantly, he’s mentally and emotionally gearing up for the fight that’s to come. To do this one of the ways he practices is by conserving his throws. He understands all the work going on out there is huge.

The quarterback’s path to return has featured a tactical approach, mixing rest with prescribed practice and game-day related movement. He has positively highlighted his need to save energy for game day while still getting in necessary drills.
