Max Greyserman, Bud Cauley and Brian Campbell are tied for the lead after an impressive 4-under 67 on Thursday. That dazzling achievement placed them atop the stars-and-stripes leaderboard after the first round of the Baycurrent Classic in Yokohama, Japan. This tournament is the only PGA Tour event played in Japan. This year it has shifted to the Yokohama Country Club after being played east of Tokyo since 2019 as the Zozo Championship.
Greyserman, who finished second at last year’s tournament, was feeling good about his chances after a tough first round. He did recognize the difficulty that damaging high winds posed. “It was extremely, extremely challenging,” he said, “but Nico made it happen that week. So I’m hoping to finish it up this week.” The 2023 competition Last year, Nico Echavarria won the tournament with a birdie on the 72nd hole.
That first round was an electric, competitive atmosphere. Eight additional players were within one shot of the lead, with seven others just two shots back. Notably, Adam Scott is in the hunt with a 68 today, just one shot off the clubhouse lead. Other notable performances included Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, who both finished at even-par 71. Echavarria, above, came back to the course with a pretty good round of 70 and Hideki Matsuyama, below, shot 72.
Max Greyserman highlighted his respect for Japanese culture and fans, saying, “I love playing in Japan. It’s a great culture, respectful people, respectful fans.” As the tournament continues, he and his fellow athletes will work hard to increase their scores. They’ll be faced with the tough conditions created by Mother Nature.
The Baycurrent Classic features a high-octane mix of emerging homegrown talent and rising stars from abroad. They are all excited to battle it out for the title of best of the best! The Yokohama Country Club will be the tournament’s new home. It should provide an incredible setting for fans and competitors of golf alike.
