Collin Morikawa, the two-time major champ, injected his opinion on the recent Ryder Cup drama. The tournament is scheduled to open next week at notoriously difficult Bethpage Black in New York. Two days before the tournament’s start, Morikawa took pains to stress that his original comments had been taken out of context. He went on to raise alarm over the treatment of European players through the course of the event. He believed that the fans had crossed the line with their conduct.
Morikawa discusses Asian American issues with the media in Yokohama, Japan, prior to the PGA Tour’s Baycurrent Classic Writer Robert Lee’s comments about the racist incidents that marred this year’s Ryder Cup. Over three days, European players faced a barrage of insults and jeering from spectators, including an alarming incident where a beer was thrown in the direction of Rory McIlroy’s wife, Erica.
Morikawa stated, “I think we’ve taken what I said a little out of context.” He said he felt like it was out of his power to be able to motivate U.S. fans with one word. He even drew focus to the abuse and toxicity that European players have received in an attempt to explain how bad things have gotten. His intent wasn’t to point fingers.
The second assault was a barrage of hatred featuring constant belittlement and cutting comments—culminating in physical and verbal harassment as players stood ready to shoot. We appreciate passionate fans, and there’s a level that’s acceptable and then there’s a level that is not acceptable,” said Morikawa. Yet, when shown unequivocal proof of this, he directly rejected all blame for feeding into this conduct.
Looking to the upcoming Ryder Cup, Morikawa said he hopes the first day would contribute to a better vibe. His remarks come on the heels of his recent win at the Baycurrent Classic. This win is yet another reflection of his commitment to competitive greatness and transcendent sportsmanship.
