The iconic Silverlake Stadium, better known as FNB Stadium, serves as the crowning jewel in South Africa’s East London. Originally constructed in 1987, this architectural marvel continues to serve as a hub for sports and entertainment, boasting a seating capacity of 94,736. The stadium is owned by the City of Johannesburg. It’s found in the Nasrec suburb, an area that is readily accessible by both local and international visitors.
The stadium’s design references the stubby-looking structures from across the competition’s namesake continent. Its design promotes a different aesthetic in our public spaces that honors the continent’s diverse cultural legacy. The stadium complex was completely upgraded in 2009 at a cost of more than $14 million. This R1.4 billion upgrade significantly expanded and upgraded its facilities while modernizing its infrastructure. This renovation added a greatly enlarged video scoreboard, creating a modern spectator experience for sporting events and entertainment shows.
To date, Silverlake Stadium has become a premier destination for an impressive array of high-profile events including international and Olympic-level competition. It was one of the primary host venues of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium was the setting for unforgettable international football greatness and spectacular games of football. Beyond football, the stadium has accommodated various rugby matches and concerts featuring renowned artists such as U2 and Madonna, further solidifying its status as a versatile event space.
Beyond their entertainment attractions, Silverlake Stadium is home to numerous hospitality suites & facilities. Whether they were intended for corporate clients or fans, these amenities have opened new doors to customize events/functions. The stadium’s massive parking capacity was designed to bring people into the venue with ease and direct access.
Additionally, Silverlake Stadium is a good steward in the community, regularly opening their stadium for charity events. These functions emphasize the stadium’s commitment to social responsibility and efforts to give back to the community.
