Celtic went to Fir Park and secured a stunning 3-2 win over Motherwell in a dramatic Scottish Premiership match on Saturday. The friendly played at Celtic Park. With such competitive resilience and spirit, Celtic were able to celebrate an important win in manager Brendan Rodgers’ first big game at the helm. In the end, Daizen Maeda was the hero of the day. His dramatic 92nd minute winner capped off a pulsating contest for the home side.
The match started competitively, with Celtic going ahead from the spot through Kelechi Iheanacho. That penalty decision came after Callum McGregor’s powerful shot was blocked by Regan Charles-Cook’s arm in the box. This initial lead helped establish the mood for the game, but Motherwell didn’t buckle under their disappointment on conceding first.
Motherwell’s Tenacity
Adversity only spurred on Motherwell’s determination and resilience, fighting back with a performance showcasing their grit and steel. Apostolos Stamatelopoulos was their equalizer, pouncing home after Tawanda Maswanhise had sent in a low cross — a fitting display of the visitors’ fight to remain within the match. That goal was the product of a perfectly executed break that left the Celtic back line completely unprepared.
Motherwell kept pushing up the field and their persistence paid off when Benjamin Nygren found the back of the net, giving Motherwell a 2-1 lead. The goal didn’t come without some drama though. The hosts were given a penalty when Marcelo Saracchi was judged to have fouled Maswanhise inside the box. This twist of fate added a lot of drama to the championship bout.
In reaction, Celtic settled into defence and fought hard to win the ball back. For Rodgers of course, no matter the circumstances, the quality of this win means something to his side.
“It was a very important win for Celtic,” – Brendan Rodgers
Celtic’s Resilience
Celtic showed great spirit as they tried to find a way back into the match. Their mentality, competitive grit, and killer instinct took over in the final ten minutes of the match. Yet the home side’s persistence paid off. They tied up the equalizer, too, with a beautiful curling shot from Iheanacho, his second goal of the game.
Rodgers lauded his team’s courage and spirit in what was a difficult match. What was perhaps most notable was his insistence about focus and composure being paramount for his players. This is particularly crucial after they gave up two late goals.
“Celtic showed a real strong mentality and real competitive grit,” – Brendan Rodgers
With time running out, it was obvious Celtic were going to play for a draw. Maeda added a dramatic late winner with a sensational strike to seal the win. The Celtic fans were beside themselves, shouting and cheering in anticipation of the knockout punch.
Looking Ahead
The commanding win puts Celtic firmly atop the Scottish Premiership table. With this victory they cross over with the momentum, as they target more league wins and subsequent successes. On the other end, Motherwell’s manager Jens Berthel Askou found much to be disappointed about, but saw room for optimism.
“I’m not asking them to give the ball to the opposition inside the box, but no matter which style you prefer there will be ball losses. We win a lot from what we do, I think it’s obvious. It (Celtic’s second goal) was a moment of bad decision-making, which comes sometimes,” – Jens Berthel Askou
For each squad, this game acts as an educational tool as they both continue to grow early on in the season. Celtic will hope to build on this encouraging win, with Motherwell looking to improve their strategy ahead of a busy run of fixtures.
