Indeed, reigning NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo returned to the Milwaukee Bucks for practice on Saturday, his first since joining the team this season. The nine-time All-Star spent the first few days of training camp recovering from COVID-19 in Greece. This sudden development raised alarm about his preparedness for the 2018 season.
Before he got back, Antetokounmpo took part virtually in the Bucks’ media day on Monday. His absence from practice not only highlighted the challenges of returning to full fitness but allowed the team to explore player rotations without him on the court. Coach Doc Rivers acknowledged the significance of these minutes, stating, “The key to our team every year is the minutes when Giannis is off the floor.”
Even as he returned to action, Antetokounmpo made it clear he still did not feel like himself.
“I think it took a toll on my body. I’m not feeling 100 percent yet physically. Just taking it day by day, getting back in shape,” – Giannis Antetokounmpo
He was able to take part in some individual drills, including 5-on-0 shooting and light running during practice. As much as he celebrated playing again, he acknowledged that he has work to do before returning to top form.
“Tomorrow I’ll be a little better. I’ve got like 18 days until the first game, so I think I’ll be fine,” – Giannis Antetokounmpo
Antetokounmpo has already put together a remarkable resume. He’s an NBA champion, a Finals MVP and a two-time MVP who has averaged at least 30 points per game over the last three years. This milestone would place him in exclusive company. He now shares this distinction only with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
As Coach Rivers further suggested, this is a process and it could take time for Antetokounmpo to feel fully back to his pre-injury self.
“He said he’s going to need a good three days,” – Doc Rivers
As the Bucks prepare for their season opener in 18 days, the team remains optimistic that their star player will return to full form. Antetokounmpo’s recovery will be crucial as they aim to build on their championship success and navigate the challenges of the new season.
