Chargers Left Tackle Joe Alt Ruled Out for Upcoming Game Against Washington

The Los Angeles Chargers will still be without left tackle Joe Alt for their week two matchup with the Washington Commanders. Alt’s injury sprained his right ankle in the first quarter. This injury is the one he sustained in the team’s Week 4 loss to the New York Giants. When Giants outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux landed on Alt’s right leg while making a play in the backfield, Alt sustained the injury. Medical staff rushed to take Alt off the field on a cart.

Alt made an early exit from the game and did so in significant discomfort, putting the Chargers’ offensive line depth in a deeply troubling state. His absence will be immensely felt as the Chargers get ready to block one of the league’s top defensive units in Washington. Coach Jim Harbaugh announced that Alt would not play in Sunday’s matchup. After hearing the news, teammates and fans alike were left concerned with how the recovery would go.

In a statement showing his fighting spirit, Alt said he hoped to be back on the playing field soon.

“We are going to get back as fast as we can.” – Joe Alt

As for Alt’s immediate future, Coach Harbaugh said it was too early to tell if Alt would be put on injured reserve. Factors that will be considered include the seriousness of the injury. Beyond this, how he leads on rehabilitation over the next days and months will be key.

Arguably the biggest task now facing the Chargers is finding someone to fill Alt’s shoes on the offensive line. That might set off a chain reaction leading to a reshuffling of their existing roster. It could pave the way for their next signings to bolster their offensive line depth. The team will likely announce any changes as they continue to get their ducks in a row heading into Sunday’s game.
