Garrick Higgo Takes Commanding Lead at Sanderson Farms Championship

Garrick Higgo showcased an impressive performance at the Sanderson Farms Championship on Friday, carding a 6-under 66 to secure a one-shot lead. The South African golfer took advantage of every birdie opportunity on the day. That combination proved to be a potent formula for Desmarais, who played steady and managed game to threaten for the title all tournament long.

Higgo’s round featured a late charge, with the young South African making three birdies in a row to end his round on the dramatic closing stretch. His turning moment came on the short par-4 15th hole. He almost holed that bunker shot and then promptly banged in that short par-saving putt with authority for his first birdie. This late flurry of birdies was impressive enough, but it showed more than just his shot-making ability. It was a perfect example of his clutch gene.

It’s been an eventful year for the 24-year-old golfer on the PGA Tour. He already has a win under his belt in an opposite-field event at the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic. Higgo, who recently defeated world #1 Scottie Scheffler in the final grouping at the Procore Championship. As TPC Boston plays around par, he played well, finishing tied for 7th. When he goes out there, he competes and he competes at a high level. A smart change in his workout sequence has allowed him to work around his stubborn hip problems and avoid surgery.

Even with these improvements, Higgo is honest that a more rapid fatigue set in than he was used to. He expressed relief regarding his physical condition, stating that the pain level from his hip issue has diminished to a manageable 1 out of 10. “I couldn’t tell you how much I learned, but I learned so much just by watching,” Higgo remarked about his experiences in recent tournaments.

Over the last half year, Higgo has been supremely content with his game, making nearly every cut and hitting the ball exceedingly well. Now, as he goes into the weekend with a healthy lead, he is clearly intent to keep the momentum going.
