2026 World Cup Draw Set for December with High-Profile Attendees

The thrilling draw for the 2026 World Cup will take place on December 5 right here in Washington, D.C. Dignitaries, such as FIFA President Gianni Infantino and former President Donald Trump, are expected to be in attendance. The event is set to start at 12 PM local time, which means 5 PM here in the pound sterling.

As we look to the future, the next men’s World Cup will be hosted right here in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. This tournament is special, because it’ll be the first-ever tournament with an expanded format of 48 teams! As the world prepares for this grand event, the tournament’s schedule has been confirmed, running from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

World Cup Schedule and Venue Considerations

The competition will begin with the group stage between June 11 and June 27. After that, the Round of 32 from June 28 to July 3. Watch out for the knockout stages! They’ll start with the Round of 16 starting July 4 through July 7, and then the quarter-finals July 9 through July 11. We’re looking forward to the semi-finals on July 14 and 15, so stay tuned! Then, a third-place play-off match on July 18, before culminating in the grand final on July 19.

The games will take place at FIFA designated stadiums in hosting nations. Some cities like Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles will have the option to use air-conditioned stadiums to mitigate the intense summer heat that could impact player performance and spectator experience.

In recent comments about the tournament, CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani has expressed concerns about the excessive heat anticipated during the tournament. He remarked, “We’re in conversations daily with the European broadcasters in terms of what stadiums you can play in at 3 PM – the likes of Atlanta, for instance.” This statement expresses our desire to remain in productive conversations making sure everyone is set up for success, and that includes you.

Kick-Off Times and Broadcasting Challenges

Fans have been clamoring over the increasingly late kick-off times for games throughout the tournament. They are proposing a number of times, including 5 PM, 8 PM, 11 PM and even as late as 2 AM BST. Montagliani acknowledged the complexities involved in scheduling, stating, “Now, will there be every game that’ll be absolutely perfect kick-off time from a TV perspective? I don’t know, because there’s a lot of games, but that’s all taken into consideration.”

The unusual scheduling certainly creates new hurdles for broadcasters looking to maximize viewership. On that last point, Montagliani reiterated the need for FIFA to be in charge of decisions about match timings and locations. “It’s FIFA’s tournament. They make the decisions. It’s their jurisdiction. With all due respect to current world leaders, football is bigger than them,” he stated.

Future of the World Cup and Team Expansion

As conversations about upcoming World Cups got underway, Montagliani didn’t mince words. Don’t expect him to support expanding the tournament to 64 teams for the 2030 edition. He stated, “I don’t see the argument for 64 teams. It’s not just us, but UEFA and Asia who are opposed to that.” This represents a shift towards the growing consensus among football decision makers that preserving quality of competition should come before expansion.

Moving from 32 to 48 teams in next year’s tournament raises some significant questions. So, we must weigh logistical feasibility against player welfare. Montagliani reiterated that if tournaments like the Club World Cup are successful, there’s more opportunity for bigger tournaments down the road. He emphasized a need for orderly development. “The Club World Cup was a massive success. We need to work out what’s feasible, (what) changes we need to make about the number of teams and the caps on each country we had for this year,” he asserted.
