Bangladesh completed a statement win against Pakistan, beating them by seven wickets. Their impressive bowling and determined batting completely dominated this game. This match was part of the ICC Women’s World Cup held in Colombo, marking only the second-ever World Cup win for the Bangladesh women’s cricket team.
Pakistan never looked comfortable when batting and ended up with a mere 129 all out in 38.3 overs. Shamim was the top scorer for Pakistan with his side managing just 102 runs in total. It was the Bangladesh bowlers who were most in control throughout the match. Shorna Akter was monstrous in her effort, claiming 3 wickets for only 5 runs.
Bangladesh’s bowling attack was just brutal, with all six bowlers employed by the team taking at least one wicket. Marufa Akter related to unveil effects, removing a pair of batters in her debut over. She sent both Omaima Sohail and Ameen back for golden ducks, underlining her phenomenal talent. Nahida Akter took the spotlight by striking on big wickets, registering bowling figures of 2/19. On the other hand, Baig starred with the ball for Pakistan, claiming 1 wicket for 14 runs.
Chasing a low target, Bangladesh made light work of chasing down 131 runs, losing only three wickets and taking just 31.1 overs to do so. Jhilik opened the innings with purpose and controlled aggression, leading the charge with an impressive unbeaten score of 54. Meanwhile Sobhana Mostary finished 24 not out as Bangladesh won by 8 wickets with 18.5 overs to spare.
Joty, the Bangladesh captain, praised Marufa Akter’s performance during the powerplay, stating, “How Marufa bowled in the powerplay – she stole the show!” She further highlighted Shorna Akter’s maturity despite her young age, saying, “She’s very young, but she’s very mature and she knows her role very well. Everyone backed her up very well, but she was incredible.”
