Portsmouth and Watford battled it out in an incredibly entertaining match that ended 1-1. Either way, both teams left with a strange sense of pride with the outcome. It was an interesting match with two extremely contrasting halves. For Portsmouth boss Paulo Pezzolano, there was little argument that the spirited display in the first half wouldn’t fly for long. Adrian Segecic’s late equalizer for Watford ensured that the visitors’ struggle to win on the road continued.
The game began with Portsmouth looking promising. Defensive discipline was often an issue for Pezzolano’s side, who melted under pressure and surrendered control in the first half. The local leadership manager’s exasperation is palpable. He took out his anger with demonstratively poor body language and even punched down the back of his seat when he finally got to the bench. After a while, he just couldn’t hold his irritation in. Right as the halftime whistle blew, in frustration, he threw a water bottle on the pitch and ran down the tunnel.
Tactical Changes at Half-Time
Knowing his side needed to turn things around, Pezzolano was quick on the trigger with his changes, injecting some youthful exuberance with a double substitution at halftime. He called a second dip into his bench, seeking to reverse the momentum of the game. Those tactical changes were smart, as Portsmouth came out of the break with increased energy and purpose.
Pezzolano ran wild along the touchline when his team scored their first goal, showing you how much he believes in them. The manager noted, “The game was two different parts completely. The first part we were a little bit too stretched on the pitch, but in the second part we were more compact and showed better face.” It was obvious that his changes made a difference as Portsmouth dictated possession well and developed numerous chances on goal.
Late Drama and Equalizer
As the match moved onwards, Pompey seemed destined to gain a crucial win. Watford’s character prevailed as Adrian Segecic brought them level in the 79th minute. Segecic jumped off the bench and expertly beat goalkeeper Egil Selvik at his near post, ensuring that Watford left with a point.
The equalizer was an indirect result of a dangerous long throw from Pack that led to confusion in the Watford defensive ranks. Yang lingered in the middle, anticipating the ball’s arrival, which ultimately led to Segecic’s crucial strike. Despite Portsmouth’s best efforts to get back on top, Pezzolano and the traveling supporters were heartbroken. That frustration eventually ended up on the pitch as the fans started chanting “you don’t know what you’re doing” at the moored manager.
After the game, John Mousinho was understandably disappointed not to have taken all three points having given two away late on. He stated, “It feels like two points dropped because of the positivity of the performance, particularly in the first half.” This kind of sentiment struck a chord with a lot of fans who had just watched a gritty, hard-fought performance by their team.
