Woody Marks, an undrafted rookie running back for the Houston Texans, is creating a stir this preseason in the NFL. He put on quite a show in the team’s 26-0 win against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4. Drafted as a fourth-round pick in April, Marks has rapidly turned into an invaluable asset to the Texans offense. His emergence is particularly notable given the question mark over the return of veteran running back Joe Mixon.
Marks wrapped up his collegiate career at Louisville. He flashed his potential versus the Titans and his initial performance indicates he could shake things up on the team’s ground attack. In this particular matchup, he was instrumental in shutting down the Browns starter Nick Chubb who was held to just 47 yards on 13 carries. As a team, the Texans rushed for 129 yards, their most of the year. What’s most impressive about this performance is the context of the team’s struggles. They’ve been held to just 103.5 yards per game, good for 23rd in the league, rushing-wise.
DeMeco Ryans, head coach of the Texans currently, loved Marks for his ability to do everything at a high level. He referred to him as a “shifty back” who has “more speed.” This addition would add a new dynamic flair to the Texans’ offensive identity. Ryans remarked on Marks’s performance against the Titans:
“He had a really outstanding game.” – DeMeco Ryans
Marks’s contributions were particularly crucial during a pivotal moment in the fourth quarter when he played a key role in a third-and-17 conversion with 5:39 remaining. This play was just one example of his extraordinary ability to deliver in the clutch. It also showed his growing ability to assume bigger tasks in the squad.
C.J. Stroud, the Texans rookie quarterback, called Marks one of his favorite coaches, reminiscing about the bond they formed during his growth at USC. Stroud’s support gives Marks the strongest hand in the team. While he’s getting this support, Marks is still learning how to hone his craft at the top level.
The Texans are in trouble since Mix isn’t with the active roster. He’s still on the non-football injury list, though, seriously hampering the firepower available to this offensive-minded team. Ryans emphasized that Marks and Chubb both bring their own flavor and style of play. As a result, this variety increases the versatility in the Texans’ offense, improving their play-calling and execution.
The Texans are about to face the Baltimore Ravens, so there’s that. With the Ravens dealing with several key injuries on defense and sitting 27th against the rush, Marks’s emergence would be another huge benefit to the Texans. The Texans should be able to take advantage of this opportunity and boast better rushing numbers on the season.
Woody Marks expressed his excitement about his recent performance and the support he has received from teammates and fans:
“I got a lot of texts. It’s crazy.” – Woody Marks
>The anticipation surrounding Marks and his evolving role in the Texans’ offense reflects not only his personal growth but the team’s strategic adjustments as they work to improve their standings in the league.
