Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors, is set to enter his 12th season leading a team that includes stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. As he turns toward the 2023-24 regular season, Kerr is currently in the last year of his contract. The timing perfectly aligns with a sea change trend across the NBA. Famed coaches like Nick Saban or Dabo Swinney frequently begin extension negotiations when their contracts begin to get short.
Kerr signalled all along that he did not expect an in-season negotiation, and for good reasons. He emphasized, “I don’t anticipate any negotiation during the season.” It’s very easy to sit here and waiver on decisions, we don’t want to do that,” Weiss said. “This is kind of a point in our relationship where let’s just see how it is at the end of the year,” he stated.
The Warriors’ head coach expressed his comfort with the situation, saying, “I’m very comfortable going into the season with a year left.” This sentiment closely reflects a topic from last year’s season. At that time, Kerr was contending with an expiring deal as he orchestrated the biggest of their type on the lowdown. The stability he brings to the team is certainly key as they look ahead to what should be a very competitive season.
Curry and Green are the backbone of the Warriors productive high octane offense. Thankfully, both of them have two years remaining on their contracts and both continually vocalize their faith in Kerr’s direction. Reports have suggested that Kerr is still the top choice of head coach for both players, highlighting his value to their prosperity.
Kerr came to recognize the greater significance of this transitional time. “Hopefully I’m here for another few years. Let’s see where we are at the end of the year,” he remarked. This approach reflects his commitment to the team and allows both parties to assess their future collaboratively.
In addition to Kerr’s impending contract considerations, Jonathan Kuminga is currently involved in negotiations with the Warriors, adding another layer of complexity to the team’s management as they strive for success on the court.
As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on how the Warriors perform and how that performance might influence future decisions regarding Kerr’s tenure.
“However this ends it’s going to be done in a really quality way.” – Steve Kerr
