One of Puerto Rico’s most promising basketball talents, Karim López is hell-bent on becoming a history-maker. He would like to become the first Mexican-born player to be picked in the NBA draft first round. Karim was born to Jesús Hiram López, who was almost 1,500 miles away in Bolivar, Missouri. At the time, López was wrapping up his studies and basketball season with the NCAA Division II team Southwest Baptist. Yet his journey has been one written by skill alone.
At barely 14 years old, López caught the attention of the Spanish club Joventut Badalona. They extended his contract, setting into motion his ascent from the youth academies to the profession’s highest level. That monumental opportunity laid the groundwork for his potential professional debut in the 2023-24 season. That was enough for him to establish himself almost immediately as a leading figure. He now begins an exhilarating new journey leading up to the 2026 NBA draft. Meanwhile, his family and friends continue to enjoy a guarded optimism about his long-term prospects.
Early Life and Foundations in Basketball
Karim López’s love affair with basketball started as a baby. His development youth coach, Alejandro Leyva, remembers a turning point in Karim’s life where the shift started when Karim was only 12 years old. Leyva saw López’s potential and urged him to go all in on his basketball career.
“I was born playing basketball. I mean, I like to say I had a ball in my hand since the day I was born,” López shared, emphasizing how integral the sport is to his identity.
As a teenager, López’s skills blossomed. By 14 he had signed pro with Joventut Badalona, another high pedigree Spanish club with a long history of developing international stars. This early taste of competitive basketball helped him develop his lethal floor-burning skills. Additionally, he excelled in an atmosphere rich with experience and resources.
Professional Debut and Performance
López began his professional career during the 2023-24 season with Joventut Badalona. In his inaugural season, he averaged 9.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while playing roughly 22.9 minutes per game. The impressive showing forced the league to take notice.
He became the youngest player in NBL history to record a double-double. In the last match against NBL champions the Sydney Kings, he dropped a massive 13 points and had 10 rebounds. This achievement represented a major development in his still nascent career and demonstrated his mettle when the lights were brightest.
In January, López reached another personal best by scoring over 20 points for the first time against South East Melbourne Phoenix. His accomplishments demonstrate his growing abilities on the field. They definitely set him on his way to being one of the most exciting talents in basketball today.
NBA Aspirations and Future Prospects
Now with dreams of one day playing in the NBA at his fingertips, Karim López still has his focus set on how to achieve that goal. Most analysts and scouts consider him a frontrunner for the first overall pick in the 2026 NBA draft. As of now, most mock drafts have him going off the board within the top 10 picks. This last success ranks him as one of the highest-acclaimed Mexican prospects to ever enter the NBA.
Justin Tatum, an NBL coach, remarked on López’s potential, stating that “his game is well-suited to the modern NBA.” He pointed out that López’s blend of skill and height can result in an “instant impact” on the court.
López keeps his feet firmly on the ground. “I mean, in the end, I’m not [in the NBA] yet. I have to keep working to get to that moment and make my dreams come true,” he stated. His steadfast belief in making things better demonstrates a sober, adult assessment of what’s to come.
“Anything can happen, but I hope he’s there so I can play with or against my idol,” López expressed, referring to LeBron James as he contemplates what it would mean to share the court with one of basketball’s legends.
The Support System Behind López
Karim’s family participates as a key part of his journey. His father, Jesús, has always been a pillar of inspiration and wisdom for his son. All this time, his childhood coach Leyva has always believed in him, his talent and potential.
“I think that’s the difficult part of his career, constantly being in motion,” said Mondaca, another influential figure in López’s life. “But I hope he enjoys it all and gets accustomed to it because it’s become a ritual for the family.”
López prepares to meet a stormy future. I want my family and friends to remain believing that I have a chance to be a first-round pick in the 2026 NBA draft. They realize that though he has secured unprecedented victories to date, the work has just begun.
