Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum was eager to play once again. He’s on a mission to prove he can come back even stronger after rupturing his right Achilles tendon five months ago. Even though he is encouraged to play, Tatum insists that he won’t force his comeback. He’s not going to rush back, and he’s determined to make sure he’s 100 percent healthy before he gets back on the floor for the NBA.
We all saw Tatum suffer this injury late in Game 4. Last season, the Celtics fell to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. He has just recently begun some light basketball workouts after an intense rehab regimen of six days a week. Personally, he was encouraged by the progress he saw. He focused on what he’s accomplished, which included walking, running and taking his first shots in rehab.
“I’m in a really good spot. It’ll be five months tomorrow.” – Jayson Tatum
Although the timeline for Tatum’s full recovery remains uncertain, he feels no pressure from the Celtics’ organization to return before he is completely ready. He stated, “No pressure to return back any sooner than when I’m 100% healthy. No pressure from (Celtics president of basketball operations) Brad (Stevens), (coach) Joe (Mazzulla), the team, the organization. What matters most to me is that I’m 100% recovered and healthy by the time I return so it’s a bit of a wait.”
Where we see Tatum finding support is in this “Achilles group chat.” He chats with fellow NBA stars Tyrese Haliburton, Damian Lillard, and Dejounte Murray. This group has provided him with insights and encouragement throughout his recovery process, particularly in maintaining his mental health during this challenging time.
With Tatum out, teammate Jaylen Brown will be forced to step up in other areas. Brown acknowledged the shift in dynamics, stating, “Obviously, I’m going to have more responsibility with Jayson not being here. It gives a chance for other guys to step up. Empowering other guys. Trusting your teammates more. Trying to accelerate guys’ learning curves. And play some good basketball. I think that’s what people want to see.”
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla has already altered his summer schedule to help celebrate Tatum’s milestones as he rehabs. Mazzulla emphasized the importance of supporting players in their recovery journeys, saying, “It’s your responsibility as a coach to be there for your guys.”
As Tatum and his rehab process proceeds, there’s no question that his main priority is getting back to full health before returning to the court with his fellow Celtics. He knows it’s going to take some patience through this process and is committed to putting his health first.
