Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United continues to be placed under the microscope. It’s produced a beautiful glossy product, but the club has struggled to find its footing in the Premier League. For his part, Amorim can point to a strong track record from his time in Portugal. Since taking charge at Old Trafford, he’s won just nine of his 33 games in charge. With the team not participating in European competitions, they have had a week between each game, yet consistent performance remains elusive.
This Saturday, Manchester United will host Sunderland—with the biggest rivalry in English football at stake, a decisive victory is crucial for coach Amorim. Add to that mounting pressure, the team is currently in a sad state of affairs sitting on the brittle edge of standings in the league. If things don’t get dramatically better, doubts about the club’s current trajectory under Amorim will continue to be raised.
Criticism from Gary Neville
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has made some very critical comments about the current situation at Manchester United under Amorim. He expressed exasperation with the tactically outdated decisions still in play. He noted in particular the strange decision to start Mason Mount at left wing-back.
“You can’t put Mason Mount at left wing-back. I’m sorry, it just can’t happen. I can’t watch Mason Mount play left wing-back in a football team.”
Neville elaborated on his worries, suggesting that Amorim’s approach is not only flawed but potentially damaging to the players’ confidence. He believes that sticking too rigidly to a plan without adapting to player strengths can undermine the team’s overall effectiveness.
“There’s sticking to your plan and then there’s your coach that’s got an idea and making sure that he delivers that idea and not flip flopping with his idea with players, which can sometimes undermine what you’re trying to achieve.”
A Pattern of Underperformance
As the season continues, Manchester United’s place in the top half of the table is far from guaranteed. It’s a scary thought that they might finish 14th, 15th or worse 16th. Neville noted that these standings shouldn’t be viewed as flukes when they happen, not under Amorim’s reign.
He cautioned that if these kinds of performances keep happening that the heat on Amorim will increase tremendously.
“It becomes a pattern and the manager comes under huge pressure. We’ve seen what’s happened with Graham Potter in the last few days. That’s why I’m worried because this is not going to go away and it’s going to build in this next week or so.”
The former defender’s comments reflect broader anxieties among fans and analysts regarding the club’s future trajectory under Amorim, particularly as they have yet to record consecutive victories in the league during his ten-month tenure.
The Need for Change
Photo Manchester United supporters are getting ready for the biggest home match of the season against Sunderland. They desperately need to change not just their tactics, but their attitude. It seems clear that many players have already started to lose faith in Amorim’s system, and this can only create further, avoidable complications if it continues to fester.
The next game will be a crucial one for the new manager and the club as a whole. If they don’t manage to pull off a victory, major ownership questions will be raised. Folks will still be asking whether or not Amorim is the right person for the job going forward.
