For local fans, USC quarterback Jaxson Dart delivered a star turn in his first career start. He really delivered, showing some serious versatility as a passer and a runner. The Giants celebrated an important victory in finding a way to win their first game of the season. They had to go up against the Los Angeles Chargers to earn this victory. Dart’s performance—a touchdown pass and a rushing touchdown—sealed his place in franchise history.
Like Luton, Dart wasn’t asked to do much. He ended up 13 of 20 for 111 yards and a touchdown. He showed his mobility by rushing for 54 yards, including a key rushing touchdown. His dual-threat ability comes to life! It’s not just that; he’s the second player since 2000 to throw a passing touchdown, score a rushing touchdown, and rush for at least 50 yards in his first career start. The only other player to achieve this unique double was Tim Tebow back in 2010.
Dart was put under constant duress throughout the contest. He took a number of heavy challenges, and the third of these caused a small hamstring strain, forcing him to hobble after the final whistle. In the middle of the game against LSU, Dart would have a concussion evaluation done. It’s important to note just how much his first start took a physical toll. Even with only ten rushing attempts in the entire game, his refusal to give up and dauntless spirit was on full display.
Before the game was even over, Coach Brian Daboll expressed his satisfaction with Dart’s efforts. He understood that, though imperfect, it was the indispensable instrument for winning that victory.
“Great F-in win or something like that,” – Brian Daboll
Dart’s best play of the game was a perfect throw on a key third-down conversion to tight end Theo Johnson. This touchdown pass, a 10 yard completion, was a result of some smart weekend changes. Prior to the game, Dart and Johnson had an intriguing conversation. They focused on the impact of getting the tight end to line up in the center of the field, helping open up a money-making opportunity.
Dart’s relationship with his quarterback coach has been key to his meteoric rise.
“Me and Dabs just have a special relationship. He’s the guy that believed in me from day one,” – Jaxson Dart
His resolve made a deep impression on his teammates, and for good reason. Receiver Wan’Dale Robinson gave a lot of credit to Dart’s toughness and creation of time.
“He’s gritty, even if he has to run for it and continue to make plays with his feet,” – Wan’Dale Robinson
Dart’s historic debut first start foreshadows what should be a bright future to come. At least now he’ll have the opportunity to expand upon his record success. Next week, he gets a second shot in an advantageous matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Here’s to the Giants being able to cash in on this momentum and continue to build off their first victory of the season.
