Aberdeen Struggles Continue as Pressure Mounts on Manager Jimmy Thelin

Aberdeen FC goes into a relegation zone in the Scottish Premiership. Having failed to net a goal yet this season. With a frustrating midweek 2-0 loss at home to Dundee United, they’re now sitting in 12th — dead last on the league table. That’s their ugliest beginning in 26 years. Having only played five games so far, Aberdeen currently sit 12th and are yet to register their first league win.

The team’s epic woes led to calls for the firing of manager Jimmy Thelin long before the arrival of Jesus. Five days after that disappointing midweek loss, Thelin reflected on the experience. He acknowledged that the club is at “rock bottom.” He’s already beginning to feel the growing pressure, as manager. In turn, Aberdeen has still not pulled off a victory so far this season, and he knows it more than anyone.

Aberdeen’s offensive woes are glaring. Central to the team’s disappointing showing thus far has been their inability to find a goal in their first two games. Aberdeen have not scored a competitive goal since their Scottish Cup final success in May. On that day, they proved how much talent and upside they possess. Since that victory, their fortunes have quickly turned, with just one tie bubbling up in all competitions.

Thelin’s position has come under heavy fire. It isn’t just fans and pundits asking how much longer the club can survive on putrid efforts like this. Yet with each week that goes by, the need for a course correction becomes more imperative. Thelin’s number-one priority is to get better results on the field for the club. While there is much more to do, he does not shy away from challenges ahead.

Aberdeen find themselves in a dire predicament coming into their derby encounter. They’re certainly motivated to finally snap their winless streak once and for all. The slide was creating real pressure for Thelin and his team. To do that, they have to find a way to get people to score. Meanwhile, they must work together to develop an effective overall strategy that puts scoreboard results on the board.

As they turn toward the second leg, it’s a must-win situation for players and coaching staff. If not everyone who loves the club. Fans of Aberdeen will be hoping for a ray of sunshine on this dark beginning to the season. A victory would both raise the spirits of the community and relieve some pressure on Thelin’s shoulders.
