Shedeur Sanders, son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, is adapting to the new gig with patently contagious exuberance. He’s served as the No. 3 QB for the Cleveland Browns. His brother Shedeur was the 141st overall pick in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. This unfortunate turn of events has moved him from the status of a likely first-round selection to now practicing his craft on the football field’s version of the sidelines.
In his new role, Shedeur is focused on teaching himself to view the game from a new angle. His biggest contributions are the handful of painful scout team QB reps that get the Browns D ready for their eventual opponents. His dedication to becoming better is clearly evident. He would routinely come up after practice to draw up plays specifically designed for his fellow quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel.
Shedeur’s breakout preseason has easily taken fans on a tumultuous ride. He demonstrated that ability on Sunday when he threw two touchdown passes in a win against the Carolina Panthers. That said, he struggled in the final game of the preseason, the game against the Los Angeles Rams, where he was sacked five times. He endured his fair share of highs and lows. He cemented his place on the Browns’ 53-man roster immediately after the preseason when rosters were finalized.
General Manager Andrew Berry remarked on Shedeur’s adjustment to professional football, likening it to “being fluent in English and now you have to learn Mandarin.” This simple analogy shows the huge chasm of differences and complexities that playing in the NFL represents.
Despite all those hurdles, Shedeur is confident that his new home of Cleveland is a step up for him. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow, stating, “I’m thankful for my situation. I’m thankful I’m able to see ball in a different light and to be able to get a different perspective than I have.”
He fully understood just how important concepts are to the game during his scout team reps. They are crucial in preparing him for future success on the field.
“Anytime you’re throwing the ball, there’s only so many ways you can get to different spots,” – Shedeur Sanders.
>Looking back on his experience so far, Shedeur explained that going up against the first-team defense every day in practice has been an honor. He stated, “I just enjoy it and like I say, that’s my game day. It’s my game day. Being able to go out there and go against the ones because I’m not out there to be mid. I’m out there giving a real look.”
Deion Sanders has faith in his son’s potential, predicting that Shedeur will eventually become a starter for the Browns this season. This idea inspires and motivates Shedeur as he further refines his craft.
“So that’s what I’m so excited about, is that whenever I’m able to showcase it, you know what, even if it’s this year or not this year, I know at the end of the day I’m getting closer to where I want to be,” – Shedeur Sanders.
The rookie quarterback has made significant strides since joining the Browns, stating, “Being in this offense from when I first got here to now, I’m 10 times more comfortable in this space.” His comfort level is key though as he gets ready for when the music stops and the best opportunities start presenting themselves.
Shedeur’s continued journey is a testament to his drive and passion as well as his determination to achieve success at the highest level of football in the NFL. Though he admits to some negativity and hardship in his early life, there’s no question that Swain is proud of what he can do.
“If you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I’m capable of doing better than that,” – Shedeur Sanders.
As Shedeur moves through this new chapter of his career, he’s focused on developing himself on the inside as well as the outside. He knows that each past experience has helped shape him and get him ready to achieve greatness one day.
