Essex require just 95 runs to secure an emphatic win against Somerset. We were unshakeable and our bowlers were phenomenal in that quarter-final, bowling Somerset out for just 99 runs in their second innings. With important performances from Essex’s pacers and Saurashtra’s batsmen, that finishes the match off and leaves a thrilling end in place.
In their first innings, Essex amassed an impressive total of 438 runs, bolstered by outstanding individual performances from Walter and Elgar. Walter’s extraordinary 158 runs and Elgar’s sturdy 118 runs gave Essex a sizeable first-innings lead. Their hard work provided a great platform for the team, allowing them to dominate the game from the start.
In their first innings, Somerset had a tough time defending Essex’s bowling unit and were bowled out for just 161 runs. Jamie Porter put in an influential performance, ripping through the Somerset batting order as he picked up four wickets for just 18 runs. This spell did not just rubber stamp his ability, but took his season haul to a remarkable 49 wickets.
In the second innings Somerset’s batting frustrations lasted as they were bowled out cheaply for 99. Thomas was the star for Somerset scoring a blistering 39 from just 65 balls. During this time, the remainder of the batting order really struggled to get into a rhythm. Craig Overton had the match of his career so far, taking six for 88 to guard England’s total. All his diplomatic work could not prevent Essex from taking the initiative.
Porter’s performance was especially impressive, as he took his 550th first-class wicket in this round of matches. His relentless wicket-taking skill has been a crux for Essex all season long. The seamers, including Porter, quickly took control in Somerset’s second innings, further solidifying Essex’s dominance.
Essex’s chase was kept alive thanks to a fiery contribution from Charlie Bennett who smashed 22 runs off just 26 balls. His quickfire innings ensured the remaining 37 runs were just a formality. With just 95 runs left to win it, Essex should be in a good place to seriously push to win from such a commanding position.
It was during this match that we witnessed a shocking scene in which Lewis Gregory collapsed with a potentially serious injury as play continued. Somerset was dealt a serious blow, but the young squad fought to the finish. They battled valiantly, but ultimately came up short against the stellar seam attack of Essex.
