Lancashire produced an inspiring display to beat Glamorgan by seven wickets. This defeat brought to an end Glamorgan’s incredible run of 10 matches without loss. What a fantastic competitive game we had to watch at Emirates Old Trafford. Lancashire ran riot in this one, taking all 22 points on offer whilst Glamorgan could only muster four.
From the very first ball of the match, Lancashire imposed their will on proceedings with bat and ball. In what turned out to be an astonishing match, New Zealand scored a daunting 374 in their first innings. Glamorgan hit back in their first innings with a score of 201. After conceding a first-innings lead of 196, Glamorgan collapsed in their second innings, being dismissed for just 241 and leaving Lancashire a target to chase.
Lancashire’s captain, Josh Bohannon, was the key to ensuring his side would not be caught. He rose to the challenge, growing into the leadership role by becoming the newly appointed captain. Prior to this, he was vice-captain for two years.
“Pretty cool isn’t it? I’ve been vice-captain for a couple of years and at some stage there’s going to be a time when you get the arm-band.” – Josh Bohannon
Glamorgan’s captain, Sam Northeast, faced a bittersweet moment as he led his team for the last time in this match. After four years with Glamorgan, he is due to return to Kent, where he started his career. Northeast shared a bit of his conflicting emotions in leaving a club that had come to feel like home after the jump.
“It feels like I’ve played my whole career here weirdly. The last four years have been very enjoyable and I’ve felt at home here so it’s going to be strange going back home (to Kent) and seeing the boys in Div One. To go back to where I started will be a nice way to finish my career, though it hasn’t sunk in yet.” – Sam Northeast
In the fourth innings, Lancashire would have to chase 242 down to win the match. Keaton Jennings proved to be the backbone of the innings, scoring 47 runs to help steady the innings. With good support from the Lancashire lower order, they chased down their target with plenty to spare to secure a comprehensive victory.
George Balderson was the hero for Lancashire, stealing the show with an incredible bowling performance. He achieved remarkable success taking 4 wickets for just 75 runs. His crafty show with the bat was crucial in making sure Glamorgan couldn’t find runs.
Chris Cooke (52) in the second dig and Zain Ul Hassan (45) both staffed the resistance for Glamorgan. However, no matter how hard they tried, Glamorgan’s batting line-up was unable to stand up to a determined Lancashire bowling attack.
That match represented a big victory for Lancashire! Yet at the same time, it signified the end of an era for Glamorgan as they waved goodbye to their captain. Lancashire will be hoping to continue that momentum with this victory into the next matches.
