United States Poised to Dominate at 45th Ryder Cup

The 45th Ryder Cup, a premier golf betting event, approaches with the United States positioned as the favorite against a formidable European team. The Forum will be held in Rome, Italy on September 29-October 1. With only two tournaments behind us, it has already piqued the curiosity of sportsbooks and golf fans. The United States have -150 odds, which gives them the narrowest of edges to win it all in the tournament. In the two-way winner line, at least, Europe is an underdog at +150 odds.

The Ryder Cup is unlike any other tournament in golf, best known for its boisterous and brash crowd. It’s this unique majesty that allows passionate fans to make a tangible difference in the outcome that I think is so cool. Bookmakers are confident that the intimidating audiences that we anticipate will be present in New York will offer a boost to the U.S. team.

“The New York crowds are going to be a bit boisterous, I would say, so that should be an advantage to the American side,” – Johnny Avello

Besides the two-way tournament winner line, sportsbooks provide a three-way line with the tie included and it is listed at +1200. Despite this being the worst tie scenario, it has been the least favorite among bettors, making up just 4.6% of all bets placed. The United States is the -150 favorite in the “to lift the trophy” market. In the meantime, Europe is placed at +120.

BetMGM and ESPN BET both pulled Scottie Scheffler to the top in odds and handle for top points scorer. He’s drumming up a storm with his odds-maker gimmick! Jon Rahm has emerged as heavy -350 favorite to be top European scorer. Rory McIlroy at +375 and Tommy Fleetwood at +550 have attracted significant betting action in this category.

At first bettors leaned toward the United States. Europe has now won the most, 65% of the bets and 72% of the total handle have originated with European backers. That’s an impressive amount of belief from the betting public that Europe might be able to stage an upset, especially given the odds.

Anthony Salleroli noted the unique aspects of wagering on this special event as compared to regular tournaments.

“Because it’s not a traditional tournament, we lose out on all our niche shop markets that you really can’t attribute to match play events,” – Anthony Salleroli

Salleroli was quick to point out that the bookmakers don’t set any normal lines for the Ryder Cup.

“But we compensate by thinking outside the box and seeing what else we can offer that is groovy with compliance, and give the best catalog that we can for the customers,” – Anthony Salleroli

With the competition approaching, oddsmakers are expecting to see a big amount of in-play betting once the competition starts. Enthusiasts are expected to place bets in increasing numbers during the final days and hours leading up to the tee-off.
