Joey and Jesse Buss — sons of the late Dr. Jerry Buss — have opened up Buss Sports Capital. The new venture is a sign that their entry into sports acquisition and investment is accelerating. Joey Buss, 41, presently holds the Lakers’ alternate governor title and is vice president of research and development. At the same time, his brother Jesse Buss, 37, serves as assistant general manager for the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Buss family’s influence on the Lakers goes much further back. When Dr. Jerry Buss purchased the team in 1979. He turned the once-embattled league into one of the most successful franchises in sports history. After he died in 2013, the team was put into a trust for children. This formal collaboration allows them to continue and expand upon his important legacy.
Over the summer, in June, the Buss family voted to sell their controlling interest in the Lakers. This transaction established the record-setting valuation of the iconic team at an astounding $10 billion. Joey Buss and Jesse Buss will remain in key roles within the organization. This will continue even after the sale is completed, in the face of unprecedented changes.
Joey Buss said he was excited about their new venture in a statement earlier this week to ESPN. He emphasized that launching Buss Sports Capital is “our first step to where the future of sports is going to lead us.” His charge will be to continue seeking out innovative investments and partners in the lucrative sports sector.
“Our vision is to really go after strategic investments and good partners — specifically sports-related investments,” – Joey Buss
For his part, Jesse Buss sounded like his brother when speaking of their partnership. “I look forward to working with my brother, Joey, for the next 50 years and hopefully this is something that can live through our children,” he stated.
The launch of Buss Sports Capital reflects the brothers’ commitment to building on their father’s legacy while exploring new opportunities in the evolving landscape of sports. Their collective expertise within the Lakers organization equips them to spot the most intriguing, early-stage investments in the space.
