Mac Jones is making strides to change the narrative surrounding his performance as a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. In the wake of this rollercoaster of a career thus far, he has proven to be a fighter and a chameleon, specifically in moments of adversity. With the possible return of starting quarterback Brock Purdy, Jones is motivated to solidify his roster spot.
In a dramatic comeback victory earlier this season against the Arizona Cardinals, Jones showcased just how much moxie he’s got behind center. He orchestrated a game-winning drive in the closing seconds. His talent for consistently moving the offense into scoring position really shines when the clock is winding down. This outstanding effort would prove to be the difference in the 49ers 31-28 win.
In that game, Jones threw for 284 yards on 27-of-41 passing. He added one touchdown and one interception to that end, producing a quarterback rating of 65.3. He drilled a two-minute drill with precision. Going 5-of-7 for 59 yards, he orchestrated the game-winning field goal drive.
It hasn’t been easy for Jones, though, as he’s dealt with adversity every step of the way — most notably, injuries. He fought through a nagging knee injury that he re-injured late in the 4th quarter against Arizona. Initially intending to play without a brace, Terrell quickly discovered that he needed the brace to provide proper support. This is the same injury that had already cost him most of the preseason with a sprained MCL.
With all these obstacles, Jones still wouldn’t go quietly in Arizona’s matchup. With Purdy inactive and backup Adrian Martinez having no regular-season experience, he was hellbent on carrying the team. He promised himself that he would take all of the lessons he learned from his coaches, and everything they taught him, and use it to improve his game.
“I failed a lot in that situation to be honest,” Jones remarked when reflecting on his past performances. It’s understandable, then, that his honesty about his struggles fuels his focus on growth. He is intentionally not focusing on the negative connotations associated with the word “fix.”
I get the impression that “equity” is often viewed with suspicion, he continued, stressing his focus on improvement over a sort of self-correction for past mistakes.
Jones’s relentless spirit has not gone unnoticed by his teammates. Running back Christian McCaffrey commented on Jones’s abilities, stating, “Mac obviously is somebody who’s proven himself already.” This stamp of approval from a competitor underscores the level of belief that’s already brewing in the locker room.
Jones gets ready to be a backup again with Purdy set to return soon. What keeps him grounded is a constant desire to stay out of that danger zone and stay at his high performance level. He’s spearheaded some critical touchdown drives this season. Most impressively, during Week 7 vs the Buffalo Bills, his downfield aggressiveness culminated in a legendary go-ahead drive that featured a touchdown pass to tight end Mike Gesicki with just 12 seconds remaining on the clock.
Off the field, Jones brings his flair to life. He commissioned over 75 suits, illustrating both his fastidious attention to detail and his professionalism both in uniform and out.
Their new acquisition, Jones, is under contract through the end of the 2026 season. This affords him lots of time to really weave himself into the fabric of the franchise. The next few weeks are going to be pivotal for him. He’ll have to fight tooth and nail for any playing time but play the role of the great teammate, even if his fate is a backup’s role.
