On Monday, all criminal charges against ex-NBA player Ben Gordon were dismissed. This came on the heels of a similar occurrence that had happened earlier that day on his 40th birthday. The arrest occurred at WaDuke’s juice bar in Stamford, Connecticut. This happened just a few hours after the University of Connecticut (UConn) was celebrating its fifth NCAA men’s basketball championship.
According to law enforcement, Gordon began to show aggressive tendencies while in the juice bar. This dangerous predicament prompted multiple 911 calls from concerned library patrons. When police met him on the corner, he was still firing fistfuls of air and roaring at a bystander with wild intensity. This incident marked another chapter in Gordon’s ongoing struggle with mental health issues, particularly bipolar disorder and depression, which he has openly discussed in various forums.
Gordon is a former NBA player who was selected third overall in the 2004 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. It was a remarkable journey which saw him sustain an NBA career that spanned 11 seasons. He made five thrilling campaigns in Chicago. He went on to have coaching stops with the Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Bobcats, and Orlando Magic. Most importantly, during his first stint in Storrs, Gordon played a pivotal role in guiding UConn’s 2004 national championship run.
Gordon was accepted into a probation diversion program by a state circuit judge late last year. The decision was a direct response to his recent scandals with the law. His attorney Darnell Crosland was optimistic when the charges were thrown out by the District Attorney. He highlighted his client’s commitment to address his mental health issues.
“Mental health is really important and the court saw his commitment to doing the right thing in life and that is why they sealed his record and dismissed all of his charges.” – Darnell Crosland
Crosland’s comments reflect a broader understanding of the complexities surrounding mental health issues and their impact on individuals’ lives. Gordon’s case has garnered national attention for its legal implications. It serves as a reminder to the importance of mental health awareness and support.
The prosecution’s decision to drop the charges reflects the court’s acknowledgment of Gordon’s strides in the direction of rehabilitation. Despite his past struggles, there remains hope for a positive trajectory in his life as he continues to work on his mental well-being.
