Jordan Cox led the way in the third T20I at Malahide today. In chasing down a target of 230, he scored 55 runs off just 35 balls, helping England secure a gripping six-wicket victory over Ireland. This victory sealed a 2-0 series victory for the club. It was a special celebration not just for the team but for the 24-year-old cricketer as he came back to international cricket after a break of ten months.
Those runs would prove to be invaluable and Cox’s innings has buoyed the team’s confidence. He registered his first half-century in an England shirt with ease—surpassing his previous high of 17 runs. The teenager showed his extraordinary talent – particularly having done so well in The Hundred. He ranked first in runs scored, was named Most Valuable Player and led the Oval Invincibles to their third straight championship last month.
The match wasn’t completely rosy for Cox. It was when Ireland were batting that he seemed to jar his knee taking a stunning catch of opener Ross Adair. Though the pressure caused him considerable pain, he was committed to helping his team’s championship charge.
“I’m not going to let the opportunity to play for my country go because I’ve got a sore knee. Just deal with it, battle on,” – Jordan Cox
Cox, speaking for the first time on his return to the national fold, said he was just enjoying the ride. He confided that losing a Test debut against New Zealand last winter had deeply affected him. He agreed that for other guys, Jacob Bethell among them, these were reasons you could point to as to why they went in front of him.
“There’s a reason why I didn’t play; there was a reason why Bethell did and why he did so well. But I really struggled with it,” – Jordan Cox
His recent success has rekindled Cox’s fire in the belly. Now, he’s determined to build on that experience and prove himself in the squad. He knew exactly how important his showing in Malahide was. He understood that if he didn’t perform with the bat he might have to endure a two-year wait for another chance.
“There wasn’t a chance I wasn’t going to bat because I might have to wait another two years,” – Jordan Cox
As he looked to bring confidence from his recent performances in The Hundred, Cox’s focus remained on enjoying the game and making the most of every opportunity. His debut against Ireland was his sixth international cap in all formats combined. His ambition to one day play Test cricket for England provides the motivation that drives him on.
