When the Atlanta Falcons bowed out of their NFL playoff game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, backup quarterback Kirk Cousins entered the contest. It’s a twist you’d more traditionally expect to see late in the game. The decision to play Cousins came after a challenging season, where he previously started as the team’s quarterback but faced significant struggles, leading to his benching last December.
Cousins signed with the Falcons in the 2024 offseason to a huge contract. He got $100 million in actual guarantees—$27.5 million of that for this season only. Cousins started last year 6-3, but his play plummeted. He floundered through five consecutive contests, tossing nine interceptions and only one touchdown toss prior to being benched in Week 16.
In his first game against the Panthers, Cousins went 5-for-7 with 79 yards passing. So long as he didn’t throw a touchdown against his own team or score a touchdown himself. He replaced Michael Penix Jr., who continues to hold the starting position despite Cousins’ experience and financial investment by the team.
Head Coach Raheem Morris explained the reasoning behind this primarily puzzling move in a post-game interview. He went into detail about how Cousins was put into the game to safeguard the starters. Even though the game was already out of reach, he had to protect his players.
“At the end of the day, I listened to my head coach, and he did what he felt was best for the team and the decision that was made by him. So, I’ve got to respect it, and I’ve got to be there to support Kirk whenever he is out there.” – Michael Penix Jr.
Most experts were predicting that Cousins would be released or traded this offseason. The Falcons chose to retain him for a third-straight season as backup quarterback. This decision further exemplifies the organization’s commitment to solidifying the quarterback position long-term. It gives Penix confidence to settle down and command the offense.
Cousins had a tough time moving the ball during his initial series. This left many wondering whether he could still compete at an elite level. The team turned the ball over on downs during his initial drive, indicating a need for improvement if he is called upon again.
As the season winds down, Coach Morris is unwavering. He can’t short-circuit Cousins’ development by not allowing him to compete for the starting job. Like any competitive team, the Falcons are trying to continue to win games while putting as much support as possible around both quarterbacks.
