CeeDee Lamb exited the game early with an ankle injury during the Dallas Cowboys’ 31-14 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday. The injury occurred with 8:34 left in the first quarter when linebacker Noah Sewell landed awkwardly on the back of Lamb’s legs during a rush attempt, causing his ankle to twist. In retaliation, he skipped 14 snaps in two series.
Lamb returned, despite the injury, for the first play of the second quarter. He was ruled out officially at the beginning of the second half. In the postgame, he was no longer wearing a protective boot and showed minimal limp at best. Lamb expressed optimism about his chances of playing next week against the Green Bay Packers, stating that he was “feeling improved as the game went along.”
Throughout his career, Lamb has been as ironclad as they come, missing only three games. One of those absences was due to a shoulder injury he sustained at the tail end of last season. He kicked off the new season with a pair of 100-plus-yard outings to illustrate just how vital he is to his club.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott commented on Lamb’s impact, saying, “It’s tough to win a game when you lose a player like CeeDee.” Lamb’s grit and drive might be what drew team owner Jerry Jones to speak up during the draft. He added, “There’s no doubt in my mind he would’ve gone out there hobbling around if we’d allowed him to.
After suffering his injury, Lamb thought back on this. He remarked, “This was like one of those protect me away from myself type of deals,” and added, “That’s the type of player and person I am.” His drive to get back out on the field demonstrates his dedication to the team and to winning.
Lamb didn’t play in the Cowboys’ most daunting challenge of their three-week stretch against the Bears, totaling just six offensive snaps. His team will have no choice but to monitor him tightly as they get ready for their next in a few games.
