Australia Sets New Heights with Record-Breaking ODI Victory Over India

Australia’s women’s cricket team achieved a remarkable feat by winning their third One Day International (ODI) against India, claiming the series 2-1. The cricket match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium was just as exciting! Together, the players accumulated an astounding 781 runs across both innings, a new ODI record for women.

In a crowd-pleasing match on December 6, 2023, Australia put on a record-breaking show. They set a monstrous target of 412 runs, completing their innings in only 47.5 overs. Beth Mooney was instrumental in this historic feat, making 138 runs. This is the highest score of her career in all three formats of the international game. She brought up her century off only 57 balls, displaying the masterclass in batting the experienced head possessed.

India answered back, fighting hard, scoring 369 runs in just 47 overs. Smriti Mandhana was the chief architect of the Indian attack, smashing 125 runs. India’s women fought hard, but came up just 43 runs short. This defeat effectively handed Australia their ninth straight ODI series victory.

Australia’s total of 412 runs is now tied for the sixth-highest score recorded by a team in women’s ODIs. The game featured a ridiculous 111 fours scored in the match! Included in that tally were 99 fours and 12 sixes, a new record for the most boundaries scored in a women’s ODI match.

This decision comes on the heels of a poor showing at the 2023 Women’s Ashes. It was a heartbreaking loss for Australia, who lost to reigning champions England 2-1. However, this series win against India marks a significant turnaround, as Australia has now won all eleven bilateral ODI series against the Indian women’s team.

This series adds confidence to Australian team’s mojo. They’re hopeful about the opportunity that awaits with the first 2025 Women’s World Cup taking place in their region, starting on September 30. Defending champions Australia will open their title defense against New Zealand on October 1.
