Yorkshire’s captain Jonny Bairstow showcased his exceptional batting skills in a crucial match against Sussex, helping his team secure a draw in the County Championship. In the other direction, Bairstow single handedly got England back in that Test, with a world class 64 not out in the second innings. This brilliant performance brought his season total up to 735 runs. His leadership on the field was critical, too, as Yorkshire was put under intense pressure throughout the match.
In what proved to be a very tight game, Yorkshire were reeling at 109-3 when Bairstow joined the action. He soon joined forces with fellow diver James Wharton. In partnership, they made a remarkable 103 runs off only 34 overs. Bairstow batted like a man possessed, punishing everything thrown at him with contempt, picking up boundaries on both sides of the wicket. His innings included 11 fours, and was his seventh score of over fifty this season.
Bairstow had already done plenty of damage in the match too, having scored 64 in England’s first innings. His excellent showing underlined just how pivotal he is to this team’s success. As the home season progressed, he became one of Yorkshire’s batting mainstays. Bairstow required extended treatment on his left leg before the end of the match. Despite that, he kept his focus and calmness at the crease.
As play was halted due to bad light at 16:00 BST, Bairstow’s unbeaten score ensured that Yorkshire avoided defeat. His leadership and doggedness was key to getting Yorkshire out of a very tight spot, saving the whites to a draw with Sussex. The captain’s production have made him for all intents and purposes a lock as one of the key men for Yorkshire this season.
