Major League Golf Returns to New York with Women’s PGA and Ryder Cup

With new support and leadership from the PGA of America, along with the LPGA, the state will soon become a golfing mecca second to none. The Women’s PGA Championship, which has recently been hosted at prestigious venues, will lead into the eagerly anticipated Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. This combined presence of major high-level golf events represents a historic time for the sport’s popularity in Sea Island and beyond.

The Women’s PGA Championship has made its mark by being played at eight notable courses that have previously hosted major tournaments. Baltusrol in New Jersey, Olympia Fields south of Chicago, Hazeltine in Minnesota, and Congressional across from the nation’s capital all welcome elite female golfers. Hosting these artists elevates these venues to great stages of enormous talent. First and foremost, this collaboration highlights how important our top venues are in continuing to elevate the sport.

Don Rea Jr., the newly elected President of the PGA of America, is halfway through a two-year term. He underscored what a privilege these events are. He remarked, “Bringing the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship to Bethpage Black is a significant milestone and reflects our commitment to staging this event at premier courses in major markets.”

The Ryder Cup begins September 26 at Bethpage Black. It’s sure to be met with big and energetic audiences! This championship’s thrilling revival to New York follows its last visit to Oak Hill in 1995. At the time, Europe was hailing a great win! Since that time, Europe has shown its superiority in the competition, taking home 10 of the last 14 Ryder Cups.

Since 2021, the PGA Tour has not hosted a single event in the New York metropolitan area. This absence has left a particularly high-profile golf event void. The PGA Championship’s move from August to May beginning in 2019 has only added to this gap.

LPGA commissioner Craig Kessler noted the oft-overlooked but critical role that venues play in determining the narratives in a sport. He stated, “Venues matter. They elevate our athletes and amplify the moments that define our game.”

The collaborative effort between the PGA of America and the LPGA revitalizes New York’s golfing scene and sets the stage for a memorable series of competitions that celebrate both men’s and women’s golf at their finest.
