Sheffield United are set to announce the reappointment of Chris Wilder as their manager in the next 24 hours. This is a tremendous achievement for the club. As it stands, they find themselves at the very foot of the Sky Bet Championship table, having tasted defeat in all five of their outings to date.
Wilder had already taken Sheffield United from League One to the Premier League. Now, he’s returning for his third tour of duty in charge. His initial tenure saw the club secure 90 points last season, just falling short of automatic promotion as Burnley and Leeds finished ten points ahead. Under Wilder’s leadership, the team made it to last season’s Championship play-off final, where they lost 2-1 to Sunderland in a close match.
Ruben Selles replaced Heckingbottom for all managerial duties on June 18, signing a three-year contract at Bramall Lane. His nearly four years of running the place has resulted in a whole lot of nothing. Their attack has faltered under the pressure, with just one goal in their past five games. They managed to crash out to Birmingham in the opening round of the Carabao Cup.
Considering the club’s ongoing situation, they decided to move on from Selles as swiftly as possible. It appears as though they moved urgently to take control of the narrative. Selles himself even admitted what a difficult task it was, explaining, “They [the Sheff Utd owners] were my supporters until today. I didn’t have the opportunity to talk to them post-game. Those are just things that happen in football, people have to make decisions on, as I’m having to make decisions with my panel.”
Selles went through many struggles, he truly emphasized the importance of hard work. He said, “That’s what comes with reality … For us there’s only one way, to continue to work like we worked until the last second in the club and always give 100 percent.”
Sheffield United now look forward to a crucially important game with Charlton next Saturday at Bramall Lane. Fans are hopeful that Wilder’s return will invigorate the team and turn their season around for the best. The club has seen considerable changes in recent months, but Wilder’s familiarity with the squad and previous success may provide the stability needed during this turbulent period.
