The Dallas Cowboys have signed defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, highlighting their need for defensive depth on the defensive front. The former first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans has a Hall of Fame caliber track record. In his 11 seasons in the league, he has totaled 58 sacks, 139 QB Hits, 409 Tackles and 15 FF’s since entering the league with the Cowboys. The agreement is slated to be completed on Monday.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he’d be all for adding Clowney to the Cowboys. He emphasized that Clowney’s experience and skills will significantly contribute to the team’s defensive capabilities.
He’s been a tremendous player in this league, and he’ll bring some legitimate depth. Jones said. He further noted that Clowney’s credibility will enhance the overall strength of the unit, aligning with the team’s strategy of maintaining a versatile and competitive roster.
After Clowney was released by the Cleveland Browns on May 8, the Cowboys saw it as an opportunity to add more talent to their roster. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer served as the Seattle Seahawks’ assistant coach against Clowney in those years. He reiterated how important it is to add a player of Clowney’s talent to the mix.
“Acquiring Jadeveon adds even more power to our room.” Schottenheimer stated. He added that signings like this are the kind of move the team needs to make, strategically, to find success on the pitch.
The signing comes on the heels of a Cowboys victory against the New York Giants. This positive win provides the momentum for the team as they prepare to face their next set of challenges. Jones explicitly linked the two events. He argued that the Cowboys’ big victory, combined with Clowney’s pair of misses, would position “America’s Team” with a commanding edge in the days ahead.
As Todd Archer, ESPN’s NFL reporter covering the Dallas Cowboys, recently reported, this was a big time, record-setting signing. His unique perspective offers valuable context on how Clowney’s presence will impact player dynamics and performance in the upcoming season.
