Most important, Giannis Antetokounmpo proved to be every bit the legend we were led to believe. He guided Greece deep into EuroBasket, culminating with a thrilling and dramatic 92-89 bronze medal victory over Finland. The game on Sunday was historic for Greece. It was their first EuroBasket medal since 2009 and their sixth overall podium appearance. Antetokounmpo demonstrated why he’s one of the most dominant and talented players in NBA history. He scored 30 points and collected 17 rebounds, earning the crown as one of the best performers in the tournament.
From start to finish, Greece led the game, never once trailing and even opening up as much as a 17-point lead at one time. As the game clock neared zeros, the team was up by 11 points with under two minutes to go. In the final minutes of regulation, Finland’s Elias Valtonen was robbed of the best chance to make it a 1-1 game. Sadly, he bricked a key third free throw, giving Greece the win.
This victory adds to Greece’s extraordinary history in EuroBasket tournaments. They thus far have won a total of two gold medals, one silver, and three bronzes. This bronze medal means much more than that – in numbers. Even still, it represents an incredible high-water mark of national pride for the Greek squad and its supporters.
Antetokounmpo expressed his deep emotional connection to this achievement, stating, “We did it. This is probably one of the biggest accomplishments that I’ve ever accomplished as an athlete.” Nothing could better describe the pride my friend takes in representing Greece on that big international stage.
He elaborated on this sentiment, saying, “I know I’ve won an NBA championship, there’s no feeling like representing your national team and representing 12 million people that breathe and live this national team. This is probably the greatest accomplishment so far in my life.”
As the tournament continued, Greece found an insane amount of grit and talent. We can feel their big victory now with great impact, both student-athletes and fans feel that. Their performance does more than showcase the strength of the team; it marks an exciting new chapter for future competitions.
As Turkey prepared to take on Germany for the gold medal later that same day, Greece rejoiced in their historic achievement. Through the beautiful game, this tournament continues to remind us all of sports’ tremendous ability to unite. Most importantly, it reminds us of the pride that accompanies wearing our country’s colors.
