After rounds of the illustrious BMW PGA Championship, Adrien Saddier and Alex Noren have shared the lead. This iconic event is one of the most prestigious competitions held on the European Tour. Each player produced moments of shotmaking brilliance, leaving the curtain rising on an exhilarating final day drama at Wentworth Golf Club just outside London, England.
It was fitting that Saddier, the world’s 68th player, closed with a flourish. He continued to stupefy everyone with a birdie-birdie-eagle run that would put him on top of the leaderboard! He capped it off with a stunning finish, showing his grit and will to power through. This made it all the more impressive after he’d led the Irish Open in the prior tournament, only to finish tying for fifth with a final-round 74.
Noren, one of the vice captains for Europe in next week’s Ryder Cup, proved he was in peak form, firing a 7-under par 65. He had to make a 17-foot par putt at No. 120, and he birdied three of his final four holes. With a steady hand all week long, he’s put himself in contention. This showing heralds his preparedness for the later-of-year Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, where he will act as one of Luke Donald’s five accomplices.
It’s going to be a great experience, it’s going to be so much fun.” Most players can’t wait to compete both in this championship and the Ryder Cup.
Viktor Hovland rounded out the top five with a strong 71. He didn’t drop low enough to stay out of contention for the Ryder Cup, where he is keeping himself firmly in the mix. Rory McIlroy was the lowest of those in question as he barely squeaked by with a 70 and currently sits tied for 53rd at 5 under. Consider that Tommy Fleetwood was just winning the British Masters two weeks ago. He shot a fine 71 today and is now 3 under for the week.
Tyrrell Hatton, who started Round 2 in a tie for second, doesn’t let up, firing a scorching 64 to stay within two shots of the lead. Meanwhile, Ludvig Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick are tied for sixth place at 10 under, showcasing the depth of talent present in this flagship event.
As the final round approaches on Sunday, both Saddier and Noren will aim to secure their position atop the leaderboard. Couple Noren’s wealth of experience with Saddier’s runaway new-gear smell, and golf fans will have a mouth-watering finish to the BMW PGA Championship.
