Sheffield United’s calamity-filled start to the season reached yet another nadir on Friday night. To make matters worse, they were hit with a demoralizing 5-0 loss at home to Ipswich Town. The loss at Portman Road marked the fifth straight defeat for Ruben Selles’ side. This is a record they have only equalled once previously in their EFL campaign history. As a result, Sheffield United remain at the bottom of the Championship table, still searching for their first points of the season.
This is a game Sheffield United really should’ve put away. After being shut out at home all last season, they haven’t scored a goal since their opening game. Given the circumstances, that’s particularly alarming. It’s similar to the sad drought this proud club has endured since that 1995/96 season in English football’s second division. The team’s ambitions of promotion, which were set following Chris Wilder’s efforts last season, now seem increasingly distant as they continue to struggle on the pitch.
Selles Under Pressure
New manager Ruben Selles was brought in to lead a style and culture reinvention at the club. After some shaky recent performances, he’s casting doubt over his long-term future with on-loan club. Despite the increasing scrutiny and pressure, Selles is staying true to his philosophy – thinking that working hard is the key to getting better.
“The business is like that. If you don’t win football matches, your position is going to be discussed always, not only for me, for any coach in the world. That comes with reality. For us, I think there’s only one way – to keep working hard until the very last second at the club and try to always give 100 per cent.” – Ruben Selles
Selles has already acknowledged that he is his own harshest judge. He can’t shake the expectations that fans and owners have put on him. His new role requires that he come to grips with tactical issues proactively. He needs to manage the emotional fallout on a team that appears to be in disarray. Legendary former player Lee Hendrie expressed his concerns for Selles’ long-term prospects. I don’t like to see anybody losing their job, but we won’t see him in the Sheffield United dugout again.
A Night to Forget
Though an especially disheartening display, Sheffield United found themselves unable to withstand the waves of Ipswich pressure. Philogene, the £20 million signing from Aston Villa, was the real star, stealing the show with a stunning hat-trick. His opening goal was set up after undoubted Leeds United star Leif Davis pulled off a brilliant decoy run that saw Sheffield United’s rearguard in disarray. Ipswich’s Chuba Akpom and Hirst nearly added to their lead, but couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.
This uninspired approach and lack of cohesion on the pitch was apparent from the get-go. Sheffield United’s inability to generate scoring opportunities compounded their woes, leaving fans frustrated and questioning whether this season’s aspirations can still be salvaged.
Looking Ahead
Owing to those deadly conditions, Selles said, it’s critical that we continue pressing ahead on all of this work. He knows that assessing how they did is an important step to improving next time. He argues that all of these changes can’t—and shouldn’t—be made overnight.
“Right now, you just need to let the people feel the pain. We are not going to solve anything tonight. In this situation, we just need to sit. There are parts of the game we need to re-analyse. The good thing in football is you have a game in seven days and it’s a new opportunity, a new opponent and things can change really quick.” – Ruben Selles
Sheffield United now faces a critical moment in their season as they prepare for upcoming matches. The challenge lies not only in overcoming their current form but in restoring confidence among players and fans alike.
