Seahawks Face Secondary Challenges Ahead of Matchup with Steelers

The Seattle Seahawks prepare for a tough matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday, facing significant challenges in their secondary. Cornerback Devon Witherspoon is recovering from an injury he sustained in Seattle’s season-opening game on the road against the San Francisco 49ers. In other news, Riq Woolen remains a starter, although he could be on a snap count.

Witherspoon was ruled out with a hamstring injury he suffered midway through the fourth quarter last week. Despite having played all four quarters during the game, he reportedly was not able to practice the entire week, casting serious doubt on whether he’ll be able to go. Coach Mike Macdonald had some positive news on Witherspoon’s prognosis, saying that he does not think the injury is a long-term one.

In Witherspoon’s absence, Shaquill Griffin would be the most likely next man up as the fourth cornerback. Woolen’s performance has been inconsistent, particularly coinciding with Josh Jobe’s strong showing in the No. 3 role. Therefore, Woolen’s playing time on Sunday could be reduced.

Jobe’s recent performance has garnered attention, and his contributions could be crucial to the Seahawks’ defensive strategy.

“He’s working his tail off, he’s practicing great. Really happy for him because of the work that he’s put in. We had an initial timetable, and he’s knocked that out of the park, so can’t wait to watch him play.” – Mike Macdonald

Julian Love should be back in action too, despite him trying to deal with a groin injury. He was limited in all practices this week and didn’t practice at all on Thursday. His experience and versatility will be crucial as the Seahawks navigate a constant shuffle of injuries and likely player unavailability.

Seattle’s defensive line has been bitten by the injury bug too. Star linebacker Emmanwori went down on the first drive of the season finale—potentially a major blow to the defense. Coach Macdonald said there are currently no plans to put him on injured reserve.

As an example, defensive end Uchenna Nwosu accepted a pay decrease this offseason in order to remain on the Chargers’ roster. This decision underscores his deep loyalty to the Seahawks as they go through a transition.

As game day looms, the Seahawks are going to have to shift their approach and lean hard on the healthy players they have at their disposal. The character and resolve of this young squad will be sorely tested against a solid Steelers team.
