Knicks Secure Brogdon for Backcourt Reinforcement on One-Year Deal

To shore up their backcourt, the New York Knicks have signed veteran stopgap Malcolm Brogdon to a one-year deal. This move comes as the Knicks aim to strengthen their roster ahead of the upcoming NBA season under new head coach Mike Brown. At 32 years of age, Brogdon’s experience, accolades, and winning pedigree are invaluable. Remarkably, he’s one of only two players in NBA history to win both the Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year awards.

Brogdon made headlines early in his career when he won the league’s Rookie of the Year award. Remarkably, he pulled off this incredible accomplishment all the way back during the 2016-17 season with the Milwaukee Bucks. More recently, he earned the Sixth Man of the Year award for the 2022-23 season with the Boston Celtics, showcasing his versatility and ability to impact games from different roles. He joins Landry Shamet among the Knicks’ major signings on one-year deals, designed to improve the Knicks’ present competitive reputation.

During his last season with the Washington Wizards, Brogdon dealt with a number of obstacles. He averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds, all over only 24 games, which were the lowest averages of his career in each respective category. He had a tough shooting year, posting a career-low 29% from three. Brogdon thus far has produced an incredible turnaround in his three-point shooting from the 2022-23 to 2023-24 season. On the year, he shot a ridiculous 43% from three, which put him fourth in the NBA among qualifiers (300+ attempts).

At 31, Brogdon is entering his 10th NBA season. He’s set to become an important piece in the Knicks’ rotation, providing the team with additional championship pedigree and shot creation on a vivid young roster ready to continue its upward momentum. His addition will likely complement existing talent and help create a more dynamic backcourt alongside other key players.

From college to the NBA, Brogdon has continuously surpassed expectations as he found himself on different teams. He played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards, Portland Trail Blazers and Boston Celtics. His eclectic past provides him with specific perspectives on different styles of play and how they correlate with varying approaches to teamwork. He hopes to use these insights in his time with New York.
