Justin Fields delivered an impressive performance in his debut for the New York Jets, leaving fans and teammates optimistic about the season ahead. The quarterback, acquired via a two-year, $40 million free-agent deal, displayed all of those skills in an electric Week 1 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. As a passer, Fields excelled in every area and combined that with impressive running ability. He finished 16/22, with 218 passing yards, two rushing TDs and even a receiving TD to boot.
Fields capped off his effort with a spectacular 33-yard touchdown reception, part of a productive seven-catch outing for 95 yards. He carries the ball 12 times for 48 yards. His exuberant playstyle was nightmare fuel for the Steelers’ defensive game plan. It was easily one of the best performances of Fields’ career. It’s even more remarkable considering his past issues with pocket passing.
Since the Jets waived Aaron Rodgers, they signed Fields. His debut would prove to be a transformative moment for the franchise. This was just one of many off-script plays Fields created throughout the game, showcasing how dynamic of a player he is when things break down. Teammate Garrett Wilson, who played with Fields at Ohio State, couldn’t hide his excitement for Fields’ performance.
“He plays it the right way and has the right mindset. Every time he takes the field, all the teammates, that stuff’s contagious, right?” – Garrett Wilson
Wilson admitted that Fields’ contagious energy and determination ignited the entire team. He noted that Fields’ passion for the game shone through from wire to wire Sunday.
“This game rewards people that love it … and he loves the game,” – Garrett Wilson
Even with a lot of criticism this preseason about his abilities, Fields put that criticism to silence with a big night. His ability to perform under pressure impressed not only his teammates but analysts who had questioned his readiness for the season.
As Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn noted, this is exactly how Fields should’ve shut up his critics with this type of performance.
“I think each one of you guys were dogging him all during preseason about what he can’t do, and I think he just showed what he can do,” – Aaron Glenn
The Jets are left wondering what their lineup will look like as they head into their next game. No. 1 starting receiver Josh Reynolds is likely out, too, with a hamstring injury. Despite the setbacks, Fields is laser-focused and confident that he can build on his success.
