Celtic football club supporters are preparing to launch a massive protest against the clubs board. Today’s action comes after a key consultation hearing held just last week. Eighty-five people participated in the event in-person, and an additional 175 virtually. Collectively, this event was the second step in an influential supporter movement aimed at sparking constructive change for the better in the club.
In the lead up to the meeting, Celtic FC held a fan survey that was answered by 38,832 fans. The results demonstrated an overwhelming consensus among fans to build upon recent ‘no confidence’ votes directed at the Celtic FC board. The specific board members targeted are Michael Nicholson (CEO), Chris McKay (CFO), and Peter Lawwell (Chairman).
Celtic FC supporter groups expressed their displeasure by organizing an open letter. They called for explanations for why the club has been so consistently incompetent in the transfer market. This letter gained huge support, quickly attracting more than 400 signatories, which include thousands of Celtic FC supporters.
The latest transfer window has been one of the most </em>important</em> in recent memory for Treble winners Celtic FC. It completed a club record £5.2 million signing of Hammarby winger Sebastian Tounekti. They brought in Kelechi Iheanacho, the free agent cut loose from Sevilla. Adam Idah departed the club in joining Swansea City on transfer deadline day. This adds another chapter to the continuing drama of who will be playing where.
At some points Celtic FC’s own performance on the pitch has been under fire as well. The joy was short-lived as the team was eliminated in a shameful performance from the Champions League play-off by Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan. Supporters responded with ‘sack the board’ chants during the goalless first leg played in Glasgow. Fans’ frustrations were echoed in a joint statement released by various supporters’ groups, articulating their discontent with the current board’s decisions.
“A steering group of volunteers is being assembled,” a representative of the Celtic fans indicated.
That all changes on Sunday, when the first match of their Scottish Premiership campaign against Rugby Park will be shown live on Sky Sports. As excitement mounts towards this derby, the mood among fans is still intense and demanding accountability from the club’s board.
“Finally, we would like to thank all who have participated in the process so far.” – Celtic fans groups
“It is natural that there will be a mix of feeling regarding some actions or inaction, however the most important consideration at this stage is maintaining, building and utilising broad fan support.” – Celtic fans groups
