Jamie Carragher to Receive One Club Award from Athletic Club

Jamie Carragher, the legendary former Liverpool defender, is all set to receive a very special honor. Athletic Club will honor him with the storied One Club Award. The tribute will take place during Athletic’s home match vs. Girona on September 24. Carragher will fly out to Bilbao to receive the award. This award is meant to reward players who dedicate their whole careers to a single club. Carragher illustrated this commitment by completing 737 down the tunnel and onto the pitch for Liverpool over his extensive playing career.

Carragher’s commitment to Liverpool has been unwavering. He’s always been clear that he wants to end his career at the club. So, of course, he cares about that one-club man thing. This ripe tradition sharply contradicts the current status of football, wherein player transfers have undoubtedly become the norm.

A Legacy of Loyalty

Carragher’s comments after leaving Liverpool. He agrees with the idea that a player’s legacy becomes an important factor in career choices. He did add that being held in high esteem at a club should matter more than accumulating trophies or wealth.

“That is why, when I think sometimes about people making choices to leave clubs, I do think you have to think about a legacy. Listen, getting the most from your career is more important than anything. Winning trophies, earning money, playing for big clubs.” – Jamie Carragher

He further elaborated that while winning medals is an integral part of a player’s career, being a one-club man holds immense value. Carragher pointed out that players would choose money over loyalty and leave their current club for a profitable transfer.

“But I do think at times there are certain moves that players make where I think, you are a long time retired. And sometimes being well thought of at a particular club, maybe being a one-club man, I think in some ways it is more of an accomplishment, really.” – Jamie Carragher

He emphasised the career decisions of his good friend and fellow Liverpudlian Steven Gerrard. Gerrard’s risk-taking was exemplified by his decision to leave Liverpool for Los Angeles. Carragher praised Gerrard’s legacy at Liverpool and speculated how a different choice might have altered public perception of his career.

“Look at Stevie. I mean, he could have gone to Chelsea and he could have won a lot more trophies, there is no doubt about that. But when he looked back on his career, would people look at him the same way? I don’t think so. It would have left a bad taste.” – Jamie Carragher

A Unique Connection with Athletic Club

Carragher’s respect for Athletic Club runs deep. He remembers when he first became conscious of the club in the 1980s when Howard Kendall left Everton to take over Athletic. As he said at the introduction, he was overwhelmed by the club’s operations and its uniqueness within the world of football.

“But I have seen Maldini is on the list. Wow. It is a special football club, isn’t it? I was obviously first aware of the club in the 1980s when I was a kid and Howard Kendall left Everton to go and manage Athletic. How they go about things, it is just unique.” – Jamie Carragher

His understanding of and alignment with the club’s culture merits comparison to his time at Liverpool. Carragher thinks the bond players develop with their clubs is priceless. He believes that this unique bond is increasingly difficult to recreate in today’s game.

“It is unfortunate because they are great players but some people just do not have that same connection with one club, really. Or something happens and that is them done,” he said, reflecting on the challenges players face today.

The Future of One-Club Players

Even if loyalty does somehow make a comeback, as football continues to change Carragher believes you won’t find players spending their whole careers at one club anytime soon. Today’s pro sports landscape is much more about dollar signs than heartstrings, making the player choice much tougher.

This was a good opportunity to hear his views on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future. Those experiences are priceless, he argues, but it would have been even more special for Alexander-Arnold to have been a one-club man.

“That is one of the reasons why I spoke so passionately about Trent Alexander-Arnold moving on. I felt he could be another one. Those players like Trent gain something, of course they do. But to be a one-club man, that would have been really special for him.” – Jamie Carragher

Carragher wanted to highlight the fact that he is pleased with his choice to stay loyal to Liverpool for his entire career. He saw value in the singular vision that can only result from someone who played their entire playing career with one club.

That was just the Liverpool way for me. I didn’t do all those other things, learning how other clubs operated,” he said. I’m really happy that I did what I did though, to be frank.
