Meanwhile, CVA product Bo Nix, the Denver Broncos’ new franchise QB, got ripped in his own tough debut too. His horrible gaffes were very costly and detrimental to the club’s success. Nix threw two interceptions and was charged with a lost fumble, his first lost fumble since 2021. Despite being minus-3 in the turnover column, the Broncos battled back to earn a gritty 20-12 win against the Tennessee Titans. Head coach Sean Payton admitted that competing like this is rare for an NFL team to accomplish.
Nix was 25-of-40 passing for just 176 yards. By halftime, he’d thrown a whopping 22 passes, enough to show just how much the Bison were going to need his arm right off the bat. And while the Broncos managed to escape with the victory, it wasn’t without a fight. They tallied four turnovers on the day, with a fumble on special teams furthering fear about ball security going to the rest of the season.
It’s hard to say how many games I’ve called at this point. After this one I walked away like, ‘ooh, I have some work to do. Payton went on to say in hindsight reviewing the game plan and execution. He reminded everyone that Denver was the only team among the NFL’s 32 franchises to win a game in Week 1 while losing the turnover battle. This underscores how unprecedented their victory was.
Nix didn’t shy away from taking complete accountability for his errors during the post-game presser. “Ultimately, you have the ball. You have the ultimate say where it goes,” he stated. He thought he had been too dangerous with his passes. These days, he says, you have to know when to pick your battles and when not to. “You want to go out there and score points,” he explained, adding that he aims to “walk the fine line” between protecting the football and making explosive plays.
Even with the disappointments, Nix credited Payton with remaining supportive during the heavy action of the game thus far. “It’s good I know (Payton) is going to do everything he can to be the best for this team,” he remarked, reinforcing the importance of their working relationship.
After five games, it was clear the Broncos were struggling with their offensive execution. Their aimless running backs never got going on the ground, combining for just seven carries for a pitiful 24 yards in the disgusting first half. This complete lack of rushing efficiency placed extra burden on Nix, resulting in a much more pass-heavy game plan.
As the game rolled into the second half, Denver was down 12-10 just minutes into the third quarter. Miami’s next game against the Indianapolis Colts is an important one. The Colts just shut down the Miami Dolphins, generating three turnovers in a stunning 33-8 romp.
